Revolutionizing Nigeria’s Fintech Landscape
Nigeria’s digital economy is undergoing a transformative shift, marked by an impressive 70% growth in fintech companies within just one year. At the heart of this transformation is the PalmPay Purple Woman program, which aims to address the stark reality that women currently represent only 17% of Nigeria’s technology workforce.
Breaking Barriers to Entry
For many aspiring tech professionals, the entry barriers into technology are often more psychological than technical. One participant shared her reluctance, saying, “I saw the tweets and heard the rumors, but to me, technology just meant ‘hacking and coding.’ I never imagined that this would be a space where I could truly belong.”
Masterclass Program and Career Shifts
This participant was among 100 women chosen for the competitive three-day Masterclass 2025 cohort. What began as a daunting leap of faith evolved into a pivotal career move for her. Following intensive training, she was selected as one of just 10 women for a high-stakes six-month internship within PalmPay’s in-house team.
Diversity Through Specialized Training
Unlike conventional coding bootcamps, the PalmPay Purple Woman program recognizes that a vibrant fintech ecosystem thrives on diversity. The initiative offers specialized training across various tracks, including Technical: Software Engineering, Data Analysis, and UI/UX Design; Operational Excellence: Product Management, Digital Marketing, and Human Resources; and Economic Resilience: Personal Financial Management and Workplace Policies.
Impact and Empowerment
For many participants, the journey has led them to roles in human resources, overseeing recruiting, onboarding, and payroll. One intern reflected, “Interning in human resources was more than I expected. I’m learning ambition, resilience, and responsibility.” Now in its third year, the program has significantly impacted careers and lives as women prepare to thrive in a male-dominated corporate landscape.
Growing Reach and Opportunities
The program has empowered approximately 250 young women over three years and facilitated 20 internships, bridging the gap between classroom learning and the dynamic environment of a top-ranking African fintech company. Each year, the masterclass equips shortlisted women with essential skills to succeed in both work and life.
Transforming Corporate Culture
An integral aspect of PalmPay’s appeal is its innovative corporate culture, which seeks to dismantle traditional hierarchies. The program implements a “no door” policy, allowing interns to approach the managing director directly to pitch their ideas. One intern noted, “The atmosphere has completely changed. There’s less hierarchy and more collaboration,” highlighting the positive impact on workplace dynamics.
Building a Sustainable Future
As Nigeria cements its status as a burgeoning technology hub, the Purple Women program stands as a model for sustainable and inclusive growth. By emphasizing both technical skills and organizational leadership, PalmPay ensures that the diversity of talent aligns with the diverse customer base it serves.
