Quadruple Amputee Cornhole Player Arrested After Fatal Shooting
A well-known professional cornhole player and quadruple amputee, Dayton Weber, has been arrested following a deadly shooting during a drive in Maryland on Sunday evening. Authorities allege that Weber fatally shot his front-seat passenger, Bradrick Michael Wells, amid a dispute while they were driving through La Plata.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office reports that Weber, 27, who resides in La Plata, halted his vehicle and implored his backseat passengers to assist in pulling Wells from the car. However, they instead opted to call police and report the incident.
Two hours later, the body of Wells, also 27 and from Waldorf, Maryland, was discovered in the yard of a home in Charlotte Hall, approximately 14 miles east of La Plata. This prompted the sheriff’s office to issue an arrest warrant for Weber on suspicion of murder.
Despite attempts to reach the Charles County Public Defender’s Office and an attorney who previously represented Weber in a separate case, where he pleaded guilty to driving on a suspended license, no comments were provided.
Weber was located after detectives traced his vehicle to Charlottesville, Virginia. He sought medical attention at a local hospital for an unspecified condition and was subsequently taken into custody by the Albemarle County Sheriff’s Office following his release.
Authorities indicated that police became aware Weber might be heading toward another jurisdiction in Virginia, prompting an active search. Surveillance footage from a gas station helped identify Weber, leading to his apprehension without incident.
Currently, Weber is awaiting extradition to Maryland, where he faces charges including first-degree and second-degree murder, along with related offenses.
A Serious Incident in the Cornhole Community
The American Cornhole League, where Weber competes, has acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, “Our thoughts are with all those affected, including the family and loved ones of Bradrick Michael Wells.” The league has opted to refrain from further commentary for the time being but will provide updates as necessary.
Weber’s Background and Achievements
A look at Weber’s YouTube channel, previously noted by NBC News, reveals a video titled “No Hand No Feet Shooting,” showcasing his determination to conquer physical challenges. In a 2023 essay for TODAY.com, Weber shared that his limbs were amputated shortly after birth due to a severe infection, leaving him with a mere 3% chance of survival.
In 2010, the American Cornhole League described Weber as “unstoppable,” exemplifying their motto that “Anyone can play, anyone can win.” Growing up with amputations, Weber learned to adapt to his circumstances, ultimately mastering various skills including writing, go-kart racing, and, of course, cornhole.
Weber credits the sport for equipping him with essential strategies to tackle the daily challenges he faces, reinforcing his resilience and determination.
