Fans Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Hannah Montana
LOS ANGELES — While there’s no official measure for superfandom, the atmosphere at Nickel Mine Sports Bar on Tuesday was electric, as nostalgic followers of “Hannah Montana” gathered to showcase their knowledge. Patrons eagerly sang along to Miley Cyrus’s hits and danced to her famed “Hoedown Throwdown.”
Bartender Mana Gaetana, donning a blonde wig reminiscent of Cyrus’s Disney character, engaged with guests by posing trivia questions, including, “Who is Miley Stewart’s brother?” Correctly answering “Jackson” earned one table a round of free shots, creating a wave of excitement among the crowd.
The bar was one of many venues nationwide hosting viewing parties for the “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special,” which premiered the same day on Disney+. Originally airing from 2006 to 2011, the Disney Channel sitcom significantly impacted the adolescent viewing landscape of the 2000s, propelling Cyrus from a fictional pop star to a real-life sensation.
This in-person event allowed fans to reconnect and reminisce about their childhood adoration for the series, which debuted before the rise of social media changed how we experienced television culture. Ashley Spencer, author of “Disney High: The Untold Story of the Rise and Fall of the Disney Channel’s Tween Empire,” recalled how children would head to school knowing their peers were also tuned into “Hannah Montana.”
According to Spencer, the unique cultural phenomenon of the series is unlikely to be replicated in today’s media landscape. She remarked that, without a significant shift in the entertainment environment, such shared experiences are rare.
The anniversary special leaned heavily into nostalgia, featuring Cyrus revisiting old sets, showcasing past costumes from the iconic wardrobe, and embodying the signature look that made “Hannah Montana” a household name. Attendees like Bethaneya Tamerat expressed how the character’s confidence served as inspiration, saying, “This anniversary reminds us of how impactful she has been for so many.”
Angelica Breton, 28, highlighted her emotional connection to the series, recalling her own closet was filled with garments from the Walmart “Hannah Montana” collection. Many fans, including Brereton, who attended Tuesday’s Watch Party and a pop-up event at The Grove Mall, spoke of how watching the series profoundly enriched their childhoods. Brereton still enjoys driving along the Pacific Coast Highway while listening to the “Hannah Montana” soundtrack.
Spencer noted that part of the show’s lasting appeal lies in its portrayal of Miley Stewart as relatable yet aspirational. She detailed how viewers felt a personal connection to the character, seeing in her qualities they admired and ascribe to their own experiences.
The early 2000s success of shows like “Lizzie McGuire” and “That’s So Raven” set the groundwork for “Hannah Montana,” which effectively combined these elements into a powerful cultural icon. Cyrus’s meteoric rise established a blueprint for subsequent Disney stars, including Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato. Spencer described the phenomenon as “lightning in a bottle,” emphasizing Disney’s ability to harness a unique mix of talent and timing.
As the celebrations continued at the Nickel Mine Bar, attendees adorned in sequins and cowboy boots honored the show’s Southern charm, sipping themed cocktails like the “Sweet Nibblets Margarita” and “Party in the USA Mule.” The atmosphere buzzed with sing-alongs to timeless tracks, including “This Is the Life” and “The Climb,” punctuated by cheers when Cyrus confirmed her romance with fellow Disney star Dylan Sprouse during the special.
The evening featured spirited karaoke, with Gaetana leading the crowd in a rendition of Cyrus’s later hit “Wrecking Ball.” During the anniversary special, Cyrus reflected on the unifying power of the show, stating, “I viewed Hannah as a character separate from myself, but what I cherish about this special is the synthesis of Hannah and Miley.”
