Real Madrid Frustrated by Girona in Draw
Real Madrid struggled to overcome mid-table Girona, settling for a 1-1 draw in La Liga on Friday. This result extends Girona’s winless streak across all competitions to three games, providing league leaders Barcelona an opportunity to widen their gap at the top.
Madrid gained an early advantage in the second half when Federico Valverde scored just six minutes after the break. However, Girona equalized in the 62nd minute through a goal from Tomas Lemar. With this draw, Árvaro Arbeloa’s side remains six points behind Barcelona, who face Espanyol on Saturday. A win for Barcelona could push their lead to nine points with only seven matches left in the season.
Fresh from a disappointing 2-1 loss to Mallorca the previous weekend and another defeat by the same margin at home against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Madrid entered the match under significant pressure. Despite the crucial Champions League quarterfinal on the horizon, Arbeloa opted to field a strong squad for the encounter.
Competing at the Santiago Bernabéu, stars Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior spearheaded the attack, with Jude Bellingham anchoring the midfield. Although Real dominated possession, the first half suffered from a lack of urgency and creativity, leading to a dearth of clear scoring opportunities.
Meanwhile, Girona, currently sitting in 12th place and comfortably above the relegation zone, intended to disrupt Madrid’s rhythm and capitalize on mistakes. The closest moment for either team in the first half came when Azzedine Ounahi’s powerful effort from inside the box was expertly saved by goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.
Following the restart, the match gained intensity. Valverde’s low shot from outside the box in the 51st minute broke the stalemate. Although the attempt should have posed minimal threat to Girona’s goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, he misjudged the ball, allowing it to slip through his grasp.
However, the relief for Madrid was short-lived. Just 11 minutes later, Lemar made a decisive move in from the right, delivering a stunning shot from the edge of the box that hit just inside the right post, leaving Lunin with no chance. As Madrid pushed for a winning goal, they struggled to maintain composure, while Girona’s disciplined defense continued to frustrate the home fans, leading to audible discontent in the stands.
Marseille and Roma Revive Champions League Aspirations
In Ligue 1, Marseille returned to third place with a commanding 3-1 victory over bottom-placed Metz, while Monaco experienced a disappointing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Paris FC.
At the Velodrome, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring for Marseille in the first half. Igor Paixan extended the lead shortly after the break, connecting with a pass from Mason Greenwood. Metz briefly responded with a goal from Giorgi Tsitaishvili, but substitute Hamed Junior Traore sealed the match with a late goal.
Monaco’s unbeaten run in the league came to an abrupt halt as Paris FC scored three times within the first 21 minutes. Jonathan Ikone netted a brace, with the resilient Ciro Immobile adding another goal for the hosts. Folarin Balogun brought Monaco back into contention with a goal before halftime, but Luka Coleosho’s goal in the 71st minute ensured a solid victory for Paris FC, just after Paul Pogba made his return to the pitch following an extended absence.
Pogba expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome he received from the crowd, acknowledging the challenge of regaining full fitness but remaining optimistic about his return to form.
In Serie A, Donyell Malen was the standout performer for Roma, scoring a hat-trick in their 3-0 triumph over bottom-placed Pisa. Malen has made a significant impact since his loan from Aston Villa in January, tallying 10 goals in 12 Serie A appearances. He opened the scoring just three minutes in, capitalizing on a defensive error, and added two more before the game ended.
With this victory, Roma remains in sixth place, leveling points with fifth-placed Juventus and just one point shy of fourth-placed Como, despite having a match in hand. In the Bundesliga, Augsburg faced off against Champions League hopefuls Hoffenheim, initially taking a two-goal lead. However, Hoffenheim managed to level the match before halftime, with goals from Robin Franac and Bazmana Toure, resulting in a draw of 2-2 by the final whistle.
