Carrick’s Commitment to Manchester United’s Future Plans
Michael Carrick has reiterated his intention to play a proactive role in Manchester United’s strategy for the upcoming season, despite still awaiting clarity regarding his future with the club.
Since succeeding Ruben Amorim as head coach in January, Carrick has made a significant impact, firmly positioning United for a Champions League return. However, it remains uncertain whether he will continue in a coaching capacity beyond this season.
Carrick has earned considerable backing from the players, having contributed to the team’s resurgence in performance. Notably, he has participated in discussions regarding player contracts while his own situation remains unresolved.
Most recently, defender Harry Maguire extended his contract for an additional year, a decision in which Carrick was directly involved alongside CEO Omar Berrada and director Jason Wilcox.
Carrick emphasized the importance of his role in key decisions, stating that, “in the role that I have, there are decisions that need to be taken care of.” His engagement in discussions highlights his commitment to the club’s direction.
Cautious Approach to Player Fitness
In terms of player fitness, Carrick has taken a careful stance regarding Lisandro Martinez’s return. He noted that the Argentine defender will only be reintegrated into the squad once he has fully recovered from his calf injury, which has kept him sidelined for the last five matches.
Martinez has resumed training and participated in a training camp in Ireland this week. With Maguire suspended, Carrick faces the decision of whether to include Martinez in the lineup for Monday’s match against Leeds at Old Trafford.
However, the head coach has made it clear that safeguarding Martinez’s health is paramount. “We are not forced into anything,” Carrick said. The focus remains on the long-term well-being of the players rather than just the immediate game.
Should Martinez not be deemed fit, Carrick would turn to younger players, naming Lenny Yolo and Aiden Haven as potential replacements in the defense against Leeds.
Injury Updates on Other Players
Meanwhile, Patrick Dorg has yet to fully recover from his hamstring injury. Although he will accompany the team to Ireland, the Denmark international will miss the upcoming clash against Leeds.
Diogo Dalot was unable to make the trip due to illness, and Matthijs de Ligt is expected to remain in Manchester as he continues his recovery from a back issue. “The reason De Ligt didn’t travel was that he wasn’t ready to train fully,” Carrick explained. “It’s essential for him to focus on rehabilitation before returning to action.”
