AI’s Transformative Potential Highlighted at HR Expo Africa Work Festival
Experts at the HR Expo Africa Work Festival underscored the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing workflow productivity, facilitating data-driven decision-making, and boosting overall business efficiency.
Taking place in Lagos, the festival gathered specialists from various industries to discuss practical, Africa-centric approaches that effectively meld technological innovation with a human-centered leadership ethos.
Redefining Workplace Productivity in the AI Era
The event’s theme, “Redefining Productivity in the Age of AI and Analytics,” featured keynote speaker Ruby Igwe, ALX Africa’s Regional Director for West and Central Africa. She emphasized how rapidly evolving AI technologies are reshaping workplace expectations.
Igwe noted that tasks that once required hours can now be accomplished in mere minutes, prompting organizations to reevaluate their metrics for success and relevance. She posed a crucial question: “What do we do with the extra time that AI offers? How can we leverage it to improve outcomes and create greater value?”
Emphasizing the importance of continuous learning, Igwe urged employees to perform personal skills assessments and embrace new technological tools.
She highlighted that institutions like ALX Africa have successfully trained hundreds of thousands across the continent in areas such as AI, data analytics, leadership, and entrepreneurship.
The Risks of Blind Reliance on AI
However, Igwe also warned against an over-reliance on AI, cautioning that such dependency could lead to what she termed an “AI slump,” wherein outputs lack originality and critical thinking. “AI functions as a tool, not a substitute for human intelligence. Sensitive information must still be thoughtfully analyzed and safeguarded,” she remarked.
Investing in Human Resources for Organizational Growth
Adewale Smut Oyelinde, Executive Director of the Nigeria Employers Council (NECA), stressed the necessity of investing in human resources through coaching to foster organizational growth. “When you enhance individual capabilities, you strengthen business potential. Coaching should be seen as an investment, not merely an expense,” he asserted.
He further advised that with the increasing adoption of AI, organizations must strengthen their governance, ethics, and compliance frameworks to mitigate risks associated with misuse.
HR as the Core of Organizational Development
Elefa Coker, founder of HREA and organizer of the event, referred to HR as the “driving force of driving forces,” emphasizing that any organization fundamentally relies on its people. Reflecting on the heritage of the HR Expo Africa, Coker explained that the conference has consistently anticipated workplace trends, touching on issues like the future of work and the transition to digital, well ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Today, productivity transcends mere hours worked; it centers on value creation. AI can handle routine tasks, but it is up to humans to define value,” Coker stated.
She added that ethical considerations, transparency, and AI policy development will be pivotal for future organizational strategies.
The Role of Managers in Enhancing Employee Experience
Emilimo Arorote, Group Head of Human Resources at Sahara Group, also presented at the festival, emphasizing the critical role of managers in shaping employee experiences. “Managers are the cornerstone of the employee experience. Engagement and retention are significantly influenced by the relationship an employee has with their manager,” she explained.
Arorote outlined essential pillars for improving workplace dynamics, including organizational culture, talent development, succession planning, and technology implementation. She stressed that aligning employees with the organization’s vision is vital for enhancing productivity.
Exploring Internal Talent Marketplaces
In another insightful session, Ifiok Ezenwa of TSL Logistics examined the concept of an internal talent marketplace. She pointed out that many organizations overlook the existing skills within their workforce, opting instead for external recruitment.
“Employees are more than just job titles. AI-powered talent marketplaces can reveal hidden skills and connect individuals to opportunities within your company,” she remarked, adding that such systems not only boost productivity but also enhance employee engagement and retention.
The festival, now in its 11th iteration, featured David Brown, managing partner at DBrown Consulting, who urged professionals to reevaluate their engagement with AI. “Don’t just surrender to AI; instead, harness it,” he advised, emphasizing the need for domain expertise in ensuring accurate outputs. Brown concluded by suggesting that those who embrace AI will gain a competitive edge and experience greater profitability.
