Nelly Korda Breaks 36-Hole Scoring Record at Chevron Championship
World No. 2 Nelly Korda has achieved a remarkable milestone at the Chevron Championship, setting a new 36-hole scoring record and extending her lead to six strokes as she heads into the weekend. This performance brings her closer to securing her third major title.
Korda, the 2021 Chevron champion, showcased her outstanding skills by shooting back-to-back rounds of 65, placing her at an impressive 14-under-par. Notably, no other competitor managed to break the 67 mark in the opening rounds.
Her stellar play included birdies on her final two holes, punctuating a round that included just one bogey through the first two days of competition at Houston’s Memorial Park. This marks Korda’s lowest 36-hole score in her major championship career, surpassing her previous best at the Evian Championship, which has been recognized as a major tournament by the LPGA since 2013. Her current score ranks third for the lowest 36-hole total in LPGA major history, trailing only Jeong-Eun Lee 6 (127), Brooke Henderson (128), and Ying Gee Chun (129).
Korda’s Historic Lead at Chevron Championship
Korda’s six-stroke advantage ties her with Jenny Sheehan and Ying Gee Chun for the largest 36-hole lead in an LPGA major since 1980. Her commanding position emphasizes her dominance in the tournament and raises anticipation for the subsequent rounds.
The talented golfer expressed satisfaction with her performance, noting, “I’m happy with how I played.” She acknowledged her mental approach to the game, emphasizing the importance of resilience and the ability to self-correct, while also recognizing the pressure that comes with striving for excellence.
Standout Performances and Surprises
As Korda leads at 14 under, second-place competitor Patti Tavatanakit trails by six strokes. Among the eight amateur participants, Ina Yoon, Ryan O’Toole, and Farrah O’Keefe are positioned just outside of a shared third place.
In a surprising twist, the world’s top-ranked player, Gino Titicle, failed to qualify for the weekend rounds after carding an opening score of 74, followed by a 73, finishing 3 over par for the tournament.
Newcomer Mimi Rose, who began her LPGA career with promise, initially made a strong showing with a 69 in her opening round. However, she stumbled late in the day, dropping four strokes in her last five holes and ultimately missing the cut with a score of 6-over 78.
Fellow British competitors Charlie Hull and Lottie Ward concluded their weekends with underwhelming results, finishing at two under and one over par respectively, following rounds of 70 and 72 on Friday.
With the Chevron Championship poised for an exciting third round, viewers can catch the live action on Sky Sports Golf, starting at 7 PM on Saturday. As the tension builds, all eyes will be on Korda to see if she can maintain her commanding lead and clinch another prestigious title.
