Leicester Tigers strengthened their title aspirations in the Gallagher Premiership with an emphatic 41-17 win over local rivals Northampton Saints during a challenging East Midlands derby.
Jamie Blamire shone with two tries, while contributions from George Martin, Olly Hassell-Collins, Adam Radwan, and Freddie Steward further showcased Leicester’s attacking prowess. This defeat marked only the second loss of the season for Northampton as they struggled to maintain their position at the top of the standings.
Under the guidance of Coach Geoff Parling, the Tigers demonstrated a commanding performance that put them within five points of the league leaders. The team scored six tries, establishing their dominance early in the match and maintaining control throughout. This significant victory not only bolstered Leicester’s campaign but also served as a crucial psychological advantage in the battle for the title, especially in front of a packed crowd at Mattioli Woods Welford Road.
Northampton arrived with hopes of clinching a play-off spot and aiming for a bonus point victory. However, they faced their first defeat of the season in 2026, highlighting the intensity and competitiveness of the match. The derby was particularly noteworthy due to a record number of cards issued, including five yellow cards and a red card for Leicester’s Isaiah Perese in the closing moments of the game.
First Half Dominance Sets the Tone for Leicester
The Tigers dominated the first half, scoring three tries to establish a solid 19-5 lead. James O’Connor, stepping in for the injured Billy Searle, delivered an outstanding performance in the fly-half position, creating significant pressure and momentum for the team.
George Martin opened the scoring for Leicester with a straightforward try after the ball was efficiently moved wide. Northampton struggled with their discipline, earning a series of penalties, which culminated in No. 8 Callum Chick being sin-binned for an offside infraction during a critical moment of the game.
Despite this setback, Northampton managed to level the score temporarily, with Fraser Dingwall quickly moving the ball from within their half to set up Tommy Freeman, who equaled the record for the most tries in Northampton’s Premiership history.
However, Leicester quickly regained control. Martin powered through the opposition’s defense, and the Tigers spread the ball wide to Ollie Hassell-Collins, who skillfully danced past George Furbank to score. O’Connor added the conversion before Blamire secured Leicester’s third try from a driving maul.
The second half began with O’Connor successfully converting a penalty, followed moments later by Radwan capitalizing on a superb pass to stretch the Tigers’ lead further. Northampton’s Josh Kemeny received a yellow card while he and his teammates attempted to stave off another Leicester try.
As tensions escalated, Leicester’s Charlie Clare was sin-binned for an incident at the ruck, but the drama did not end there. Freddie Steward broke through the defense, leading to further scoring opportunities, while George Hendy managed to find the try line for Northampton amidst the chaos of the match.
Late into the game, a head collision involving Perese resulted in a red card, but the celebration for Leicester continued as they secured a significant victory, leaving them in a strong position in the Gallagher Premiership as they pursue their title ambitions.
