Cultural Diversity as a Bridge to Unity and Development
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has urged young Nigerians to leverage the country’s rich cultural diversity as a means to foster unity, peace, and sustainable development. This message was delivered by Anambra State Coordinator, Pauline Ojisuah, during the 2026 Batch “A” Stream II Inter-Platoon Cultural Carnival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe NYSC Unified Permanent Orientation Camp in Awka South Local Government Area.
Showcasing Nigeria’s Cultural Heritage
Ms. Ojisuah highlighted that the cultural carnival was organized to celebrate Nigeria’s vast cultural heritage and to spotlight opportunities for the youth to transform these cultural assets into profitable ventures through exports and business initiatives. With over 250 ethnic groups, each possessing unique languages, traditions, and values, Nigeria is a tapestry of cultural richness.
Diversity as a Unifying Force
She emphasized that Nigeria’s diversity should not be viewed as a source of division but rather as a unifying force that brings the nation together in development and harmony. “Our diversity is not a barrier; it is a bridge that binds us in unity, peace, and national progress,” she stated. The carnival serves as a reminder that despite differing backgrounds, all Nigerians share a common destiny.
Celebrating Creativity and Team Spirit
Ms. Ojisuah commended the members of Platoon 10 for their enthusiasm, creativity, and teamwork in preparing for the event. Their vibrant displays were a testament to the spirit of the NYSC in promoting unity, selfless service, and mutual respect among Nigerians. She expressed gratitude towards Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, for his continued support of the program, as well as acknowledging the presence of traditional rulers and other guests.
Unity in Diversity
Throughout the carnival, participants enjoyed a rich display of dancing, singing, cooking, fashion shows, and cultural performances, showcasing the diversity of Nigeria’s many cultures. She encouraged attendees to remember that this diversity is the nation’s greatest strength and hope for a unified future. Touching on the importance of cultural heritage, Ms. Ojisuah quoted Marcus Garvey, underscoring the significance of understanding one’s history and values.
Highlighting National Integration
In his remarks, the Carnival Committee Chairman, Ben Obi, expressed gratitude for the blessings that kept the members safe during their week of camp activities. He reiterated that the NYSC’s mission revolves around national integration, emphasizing that the carnival exemplifies its success. “We celebrate unity in diversity, with over 2,000 participants from various states and ethnic backgrounds uniting under one flag, one anthem, and one purpose: service to our country,” Obi stated.
Support from Traditional Rulers
His Highness Igwe Ben Emeka (Okebo II), the Traditional Ruler of Umueri Community, acknowledged the NYSC as a crucial mechanism for fostering unity among Nigerians. He praised the scheme for facilitating mutual understanding through interactive orientation programs such as the cultural carnival. Emeka stressed that the enthusiasm demonstrated by the participants underscored Nigeria’s national ethos of “Peace, Unity, and Progress.” He pledged continued support for the NYSC from traditional leaders in the region and encouraged corps members to cherish the relationships formed in Anambra state.
