SAN JOSE, Calif. — Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Sebastian Berhalter expressed that he does not feel under pressure as the U.S. World Cup roster announcement approaches in the final weeks leading up to the event.
In a recent match, Berhalter contributed significantly to the Whitecaps’ efforts, scoring the equalizing goal in a 1-1 draw against the Western Conference-leading San Jose Earthquakes. This performance comes just weeks before U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino is set to unveil his World Cup squad on May 26.
Anticipation Ahead of the World Cup
Despite the timing of his goal, Berhalter remains unfazed by the stakes. “I’m very grateful,” he reflected post-match. “A year ago, I hadn’t even made my debut for the national team, so to be in this position now feels incredible.” He emphasized that he views the situation not as pressure but as a unique opportunity. “Representing my country at a home World Cup would mean the world to me,” he stated, highlighting the honor of potentially being part of the team.
While pleased with his goal’s contribution to the game, Berhalter does not believe it will drastically influence the coaching staff’s decisions. He is confident that his consistent performances over the past year, where he has participated in 11 matches for the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT), will solidify his place on the final roster.
“I think they’re pretty much set in stone already,” Berhalter shared regarding the coaching staff’s expectations. “They know what I can bring to the field. My focus remains on demonstrating my abilities and contributing whenever possible.”
Earlier this week, Berhalter acknowledged a temporary break after news broke that Atletico Madrid’s Johnny Cardoso sustained a right ankle sprain. Although there is no set timetable for Cardoso’s return, Berhalter expressed optimism for his recovery, underscoring Cardoso’s viability for the national team.
Berhalter’s competition for a roster spot includes notable players like Cristian Roldan from the Seattle Sounders and Aidan Morris from Middlesbrough. “Johnny’s a talented player, and I genuinely hope he recovers in time,” Berhalter noted, emphasizing Cardoso’s worthiness for the national squad.
Looking ahead, Berhalter has three road matches this month with the Whitecaps, culminating in a decisive game against FC San Diego on May 23. “Our focus is solely on winning games,” he asserted. “With teammates dedicated to achieving victory, I’m not preoccupied with anything else—just securing those three points each match.”
