Comey Raises Concerns Over Justice Department’s Independence Amid Political Pressures
Former FBI Director James Comey emphasized on Tuesday that the Justice Department’s ability to uphold the rule of law in the United States is compromised while it remains entangled with President Donald Trump’s political adversaries.
Call for Impartiality in Law Enforcement
In an interview with NBC News, Comey asserted the necessity for a fair and impartial Justice Department that bases its decisions strictly on facts and legal principles. He insisted that the department must function as a vigilant watchdog, making judgments free from considerations of race, wealth, or political affiliation.
Legal Actions Against Trump’s Opponents
The Justice Department is currently pursuing legal actions against multiple figures critical of President Trump, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, California Senator Adam Schiff, and former CIA Director John Brennan. Additionally, officials sought to indict six members of Congress, including Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), for allegedly encouraging military personnel to disregard unlawful orders. However, a grand jury opted not to proceed with these indictments.
Concerns About Political Targeting
Comey expressed that the department must not pursue individuals like Schiff or James simply because their criticism is unwelcome to the President. He warned that if this political targeting persists, the rule of law in the country would be severely undermined.
Legal Challenges Faced by Comey and James
Recently, a judge ruled that the appointment of federal prosecutors in these cases was unconstitutional, leading to the dismissal of charges against both Comey and James. Comey was previously charged with making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional investigation, to which he pleaded not guilty. Similarly, James faced charges related to bank fraud and false statements to a financial institution, also entering a not guilty plea. The Justice Department has since indicated plans to appeal these rulings.
New Indictments and Ongoing Tensions
Last month, law enforcement officials initiated another indictment against Comey, linked to a photograph of seashells he posted on Instagram in May 2025. The arrangement of the shells, which formed the numbers “8647,” has been interpreted by the government as a veiled threat against Trump. Comey clarified that the post was not intended as a threat, explaining that “86” symbolizes something lacking in the restaurant industry, while “47” refers to Trump, the 47th president.
Comey’s Perspective on Political Retaliation
During the interview, Comey highlighted his belief that Trump’s ongoing legal attempts against him aim to intimidate critics and convey a message to potential dissenters. He characterized Trump’s focus on him as an exercise in retaliation, stressing that this dynamic could silence voices critical of the administration.
Anticipation of Future Legal Actions
While Comey remains uncertain about any new charges the Trump administration might pursue against him, he cautioned that both he and other Trump critics should remain vigilant. He suggested that the Department of Justice’s resources may be utilized to placate the President and retaliate against those who speak out against him.
