Charlie Hull Starts Strong at the LPGA Kroger Queen City Championship
Charlie Hull, the defending champion of the LPGA Tour’s Kroger Queen City Championship, showcased impressive form despite previous concerns. After an opening round of 68, Hull is just two strokes shy of the leaders at Maketewa Country Club in Ohio. The three-time LPGA Tour winner, who claimed last year’s title in spectacular fashion, currently shares seventh place.
Following a disappointing performance at the Mizuho Americas Open, where she missed the cut, Hull rebounded by birdieing the par-4 15th hole. She offset a bogey on the second hole with a birdie-eagle streak starting from the sixth hole, briefly placing her among the leaders.
Choi, Yoon, and Takeda Set the Early Pace
While Hull made her move, Chela Choi, Ina Yoon, and Rio Takeda each carded impressive opening rounds of 66. However, Choi’s momentum waned after consecutive bogeys, pushing her back to a tie for first with Yoon. Notably, Takeda recorded a remarkable 4-under 66, making five birdies and only one bogey.
Hull reflected on her performance, stating, “I hit some good shots, but my 5-iron on the final hole was a miss.” She also voiced concerns about the condition of the bunkers, suggesting that the greens staff could improve how they are maintained. Despite her frustrations, she expressed satisfaction with her overall play.
Top Contenders in Close Competition
In terms of overall rankings, former major champions Jin Yong Ko and Lilia Vu are tied for fourth place, trailing Amanda Doherty by just one stroke. Meanwhile, Lydia Ko matched Hull’s score of 68 but bogeyed the final hole, which hindered her ascent up the leaderboard.
The challenging course conditions made it difficult for players to navigate effectively. Ko mentioned that the front and back nines felt distinctly different, where even minor missteps could lead to considerable penalties. She managed to keep her composure, noting that holing a couple of putts on the back nine contributed to her resilience today.
Global Stars Maintain Close Scores
At the top of the leaderboard, the world’s leading players, Nelly Korda and Gino Titikul, find themselves just three points shy of the leaders. They are in close competition with England’s Lottie Ward and Solheim Cup captain Anna Nordqvist, who posted scores in the par 70s.
European Tour Highlights
At the same time on the European Women’s Tour, Leonie Harm put forth a stellar effort, shooting a bogey-free 65 to secure a one-stroke lead over her compatriot Esther Henseleit in the Amundi German Masters. With a total of eight birdies, Harm demonstrated exceptional skill at Green Eagle Golf Course.
