Call for Enhanced Electoral Accessibility for Older Nigerians
The National Center for the Elderly (NSCC) has urged for polling stations to become more accessible and for electoral support systems to be improved, ensuring that older Nigerians can actively and dignifiedly participate in the democratic process.
Forum Highlights Need for Inclusive Electoral Participation
This appeal was made during the Citizens Open Forum and the unveiling of the Elderly Support Emblem in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as detailed in a statement from Abdulfatai Otori, the NSCC Head of Corporate Affairs, Media and Communications.
Engaging Stakeholders to Discuss Barriers to Participation
The event, organized by the Rivers State Senior Citizens Forum, centered around the theme “Silver Vote: Ensuring the Inclusive and Dignified Participation of Senior Citizens in the Electoral Process.” It brought together elderly individuals, government representatives, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, and various stakeholders to address challenges that hinder older adults from participating in elections.
Advocacy for the Rights of Older Citizens
In her welcome address, Georgiana Tenaro, President of the Rivers State Elderly Association, emphasized the importance of ongoing advocacy to protect the rights, welfare, and inclusion of older individuals in Nigeria’s development and democratic governance.
NSCC Calls for Institutional Support and Legislative Action
Addressing attendees on behalf of the Treasurer and Accountant General, NSCC Executive Secretary Yemisi Afolabi stressed the need for Nigerian democratic institutions to create an environment where older citizens can engage safely and actively in the electoral process. He urged the Rivers State government to implement the NSCC Act, reinforcing institutional support and establishing dedicated centers to enhance access to programs and services for seniors.
Identifying Challenges Faced by Older Voters
During the forum, participants outlined numerous barriers that older adults frequently encounter during elections. These include inaccessible polling locations, long wait times, transportation difficulties, and insufficient voter education.
Proposed Solutions for Improved Electoral Experience
Attendees advocated for actionable measures such as providing polling stations with seating and shaded areas, offering priority voting for older individuals, enhancing voter education through community initiatives, and improving support services tailored to assist older voters during elections.
Launch of the Elderly Support Emblem
The forum also marked the launch of the Elderly Support Emblem, an initiative designed to foster increased awareness, inclusivity, and social support for older adults nationwide. A notable recognition during the event was the Award of Excellence presented to Ms. Omobolanle Akinyemi Obe for her leadership and contributions toward advancing policies and programs aimed at enhancing the welfare and quality of life for seniors in Nigeria.
