Concerns Over Candidate Selection for 2027 Elections in Nsukka
Stakeholders in Nsukka, located within the Enugu North Senatorial District, have issued a strong warning to the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Party Congress (NDC). They caution against allowing wealthy or transactional motivations to dictate the selection of candidates for the upcoming 2027 senatorial elections.
In a press statement articulated by Chief Ugwoke Odo, representing the concerned stakeholders, the group emphasized that candidate eligibility should hinge on factors like popularity, credibility, grassroots acceptance, and a genuine connection with the electorate. They firmly rejected the notion of relying on economic influence or political imposition as criteria for candidacy.
The stakeholders expressed that any attempt to impose a candidate lacking popular support through money-driven strategies could have severe repercussions, not just for the party in Enugu North, but also on its broader status in Enugu State.
Historical trends in Nsukka politics reveal a consistent preference among voters for relatable, community-focused leaders. This group believes that candidates who prioritize financial power or political clout often fall short of public expectations.
The statement also pointed out the district’s past electoral experiences, which demonstrate a strong aversion to transactional politics. The electorate is more inclined to support candidates who showcase deep grassroots engagement and broad public appeal.
In light of these concerns, stakeholders have urged Peter Obi to influence the NDC leadership to ensure that only candidates with authentic popularity and substantial support represent the party in the 2027 elections. They warned that deviating from this principle could provoke a political backlash, jeopardizing the party’s electoral success.
Furthermore, stakeholders cautioned against heeding the wishes of Rt. My Lord Dr. Pat Asadu for the Enugu North senatorial ticket, labeling such a decision as a potential liability for the party. They articulated that Asadu’s 16-year tenure representing the Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly has left many constituents feeling disappointed and overburdened, questioning his past performance.
In their analysis, stakeholders claimed that Asadu undermined Nsukka’s political interests during the 2023 governorship elections, alleging that a promise of the senatorial nomination was made to him by Peter Mba’s government, raising eyebrows about his political motivations. They noted that his renewed commitment to Nsukka appeared contingent upon being denied both a by-election ticket and his anticipated senatorial opportunity.
The group further accused Asadu of breaching the longstanding rotation agreement between Nsukka and Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency in pursuit of his personal ambitions, dismissing principles of fairness, equity, and political harmony. They also indicated that he has yet to apologize for actions deemed damaging to the Nsukka project during the recent gubernatorial election.
As such, stakeholders expressed unease over Asadu’s intention to contest the 2027 Senate election under the NDC banner, arguing that his candidacy could weaken the party’s standing in the constituency. They highlighted concerns that allowing such candidates could threaten the carefully maintained rotational agreement among local governments within Enugu North Senatorial District.
The stakeholders asserted that residents of Udenu anticipate a rotation of the Senate seat by 2031, while those in Igbo-Etiti look towards 2039 for their turn. They stressed that politicians unwilling to honor this political consensus risk destabilization of the established order. Candidates aspiring to represent Enugu North in the upcoming elections must demonstrate integrity, humility, grassroots engagement, respect for consensus, and dedication to the common good.
Ultimately, the group concluded by asserting that the era of candidates relying on financial intimidation is over. They contend that only those who are genuinely accepted by the electorate can assure a successful outcome for the party in the 2027 elections.
