NITDA Refutes Claims of Partnership with CPM
The National Information Technology Development Authority (NITDA) has officially denied any collaboration with the online revenue and marketing platform known as CPM. This denial follows alarming reports that the platform was soliciting payments from users to restore systems reportedly affected by hacking incidents.
Agency Calls Reports False and Misleading
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Hadiza Umar, Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations, NITDA labeled the circulating reports as inaccurate and misleading.
Users Report Hacking and Additional Payment Requests
According to various media outlets, users of CPM reported that their systems had been compromised and that they were required to make further payments to resolve the issue and recover lost funds.
NITDA’s Role in Addressing the Incident
While NITDA acknowledged its involvement in addressing the reported cybersecurity issue, it clarified that the agency does not request additional payments from users, emphasizing its role as a government entity.
Agency Disassociates from CPM
The authority firmly disassociated itself from CPM, asserting that it does not solicit payments for incident response or fund recovery, nor does it collaborate with private entities in resolving cybersecurity crises. This stance was articulated through an explicit statement by NITDA.
Caution Against Potential Fraud
NITDA expressed concern that CPM’s actions might suggest attempts at social engineering or fraud. The agency warned the public that these maneuvers could exploit affected individuals under the pretense of aiding in cyber incident resolutions or recovering lost investments.
Public Advisory on Financial Transactions
The agency urged Nigerians to exercise caution and refrain from making any payments to organizations or individuals claiming NITDA’s endorsement for such transactions. NITDA highlighted the importance of verifying any claims of government involvement directly with official channels, advising users to safeguard their sensitive personal and financial information.
Commitment to Cybersecurity Awareness
NITDA remains dedicated to enhancing cybersecurity awareness and protecting the public from online fraud and deceptive practices. It has stressed the importance of promptly reporting any suspicious cyber activities to relevant authorities to combat the increasing threat of online attacks.
