St Helens Rugby Legends Announce Retirement Plans
St Helens captain Jody Cunningham and vice-captain Emily Rudge have confirmed their retirement from rugby league at the conclusion of the 2026 season. At 34 years old, both players have not only been lifelong friends but also stand as England’s most capped female rugby players.
Their final appearance on the field will occur during the upcoming Challenge Cup final against Wigan at Wembley, marking the end of an extraordinary chapter in both their careers.
Cunningham and Rudge, who have shared a bond since their school days, have been teammates since 2005. Throughout their tenure with St Helens, they have played pivotal roles in securing the Women’s Super League title, achieving two League Leaders’ Seals, and winning four consecutive Women’s Challenge Cups from 2021 to 2024.
Recognizing a Flourishing Career
The duo was part of St Helens’ inaugural women’s team formed in 2018. Cunningham took on the co-captaincy in 2019 and became the club’s sole captain in 2021, steering the squad to an unprecedented treble. She was also honored as the Woman of Steel for the 2021 Betfred Super League season and has made a remarkable 95 appearances for St Helens, scoring 43 tries. Additionally, Cunningham has represented England’s national team 34 times, surpassing Rudge’s record of 33 last year.
“Knowing this is our last year, we decided to go public so we could completely enjoy our final moments in a tournament that has been pivotal to our careers,” Cunningham stated. “Rugby league has provided me everything in life, and I am incredibly thankful for the chance to play this sport I cherish.”
Enduring Commitment and Future Aspirations
Rudge, a former England captain and one of only two players to reach 100 appearances for St Helens, emphasized her passion for the sport. With an impressive 48 tries to her name, she expressed enthusiasm for her remaining matches. “I believe I could continue for a few more years, but I know this is the right decision. I look forward to exploring new opportunities,” Rudge revealed. “Rugby league has significantly influenced my life, shaping my identity and enabling me to create lasting memories.”
Both players view their time at St Helens as a unique journey, filled with camaraderie. “Starting from our inaugural year in 2018 and still sharing the pitch with many of the same teammates has been incredible,” Rudge noted. “Our unity truly reflects on the field.”
A Focused Final Season
As they head into their final season, both Cunningham and Rudge are determined to make it unforgettable. They aim to give their all, not only for the Challenge Cup but also in the Women’s Super League and the upcoming World Cup later this year. “Competing in my fifth World Cup has always been my dream, but right now, my completely focused on St Helens,” Rudge mentioned. “I want to help the team achieve their best season yet and savor every moment of this last year.”
