Deployment of Special Forces in Oyo State Following Kidnapping Incident
The Chief of Defense Staff, Mr. Olufemi Oluyede, has initiated the deployment of Special Forces and Air Surveillance Units to Oyo State in response to a recent kidnapping incident in the region. This action underscores the military’s commitment to restoring security and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Military Assures Residents of Ongoing Security Efforts
In a statement, Oluyede assured residents that the military’s operations will continue unrelentingly until the area is deemed safe again. The Director of Defense Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, addressed journalists on Tuesday, noting that the Nigerian Armed Forces recognize the growing security concerns in Oyo State and extend their sympathies to the affected families, the local government, and the community at large.
Recognition of Security Threats in Oyo State
Onoja emphasized that the Defense Headquarters acknowledges the recent kidnapping incidents in Oyo State. General Oluyede has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, reiterating that any threat to civilian safety is viewed as a grave affront to national sovereignty.
Enhancements in Security Measures Initiated
In light of recent events, the Chief of Defense Staff has directed enhanced security measures in the affected areas. This includes deploying advanced aerial surveillance technologies and specialized ground forces, executed in collaboration with local state authorities to ensure a comprehensive response to the incidents.
Military Operations Yielding Positive Intelligence
According to Onoja, the ongoing operations are already generating valuable intelligence, and the military remains committed to capturing those responsible for the kidnappings. The proactive measures taken have begun to bear fruit, with enhanced cooperation between military and state forces aimed at ensuring the safety of the community.
Operational Statistics Reflect Mixed Results
The military has released operational statistics for May 2026, indicating that 314 suspects were arrested, and 221 kidnapped civilians were rescued across the nation. In addition, military operations resulted in the neutralization of 118 terrorists, the surrender of 18 militants, the recovery of 93 weapons, and the dismantling of three illegal refineries, along with the recovery of over 21,000 liters of various petroleum products.
Call for Community Support in Security Efforts
The Chief of Defense Staff commended the “bravery, tactical ingenuity, and professionalism” of the troops engaged in these operations. He urged commanders to maintain their momentum while emphasizing the importance of troop welfare and civilian protection. Additionally, he encouraged citizens to continue collaborating with security agencies by providing timely and reliable information, as community involvement is crucial for the success of ongoing military operations.
Recent Kidnapping Incidents Heighten Security Concerns
The urgency of these security measures is underscored by a series of alarming kidnappings in Oyo State. On May 15, armed men abducted 39 students and seven teachers from the Ahoro-Esinere community in the Oriile Local Government Area, leading to the tragic beheading of one teacher, Michael Oedokun. Even as residents grapple with the aftermath, armed groups have carried out further raids, including the kidnapping of two staff members at the Cocoa Institute of Nigeria in Ibadan, fueling heightened security fears throughout the region.
