Kip Poppart Makes DP World Tour Debut at Austrian Alpine Open
Kip Poppart, recognized as the world’s leading golfer with a disability, marked his DP World Tour debut at the Austrian Alpine Open following the suspension of the G4D (Golf for the Disabled) Tour. The British golfer, who lives with cerebral palsy, boasts an impressive 15 victories on the G4D Tour, including a triumph at last year’s G4D Tour Series final held at the Club de Golf Alcanada in Mallorca.
Career Highlights and Milestones
Poppart has reached significant milestones throughout his golf career. Notably, he became the first golfer with a disability to qualify for the R&A Amateur Championship, which took place at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s in 2022. His recent achievements have led him to climb to the top of the world rankings for golfers with disabilities, particularly after securing four G4D events in 2025.
Competitive Field at Kitzbühel
This week, Poppart joins a competitive field in Kitzbühel, featuring local sensation Sepp Straka as well as fellow British golfers James Morrison and Brandon Robinson-Thompson. Notably, China’s Yanhan Chou set the early pace with a remarkable 8-under 62 in the first round, highlighting the strong competition facing Poppart.
First Round Performance
On a pleasant day in the Austrian Alps, Poppart completed his first nine holes at 3 over par. Following the turn, he showcased his skills with two birdies and two bogeys, but closed out the round with a double bogey, another birdie, and a bogey, finishing the round at 5 over par with a score of 75. His putting stood out during the round, with a standout long putt for birdie on the 12th hole and a similar distance on the 16th.
Impact of G4D Tour Suspension
Poppart’s last participation on the G4D Tour occurred in May during the G4D Open at Celtic Manor Resort in Wales, where South Korea’s Simon Seung-min Lee emerged victorious. Unfortunately, it was announced in April that the G4D Tour would be indefinitely postponed, affecting many players reliant on these events.
Ongoing Commitment to Inclusion in Golf
The DP World Tour has indicated its commitment to continue hosting significant events like the annual G4D Open and the upcoming G4D Ryder Cup, competitions that feature Team Europe against Team USA. Poppart expressed his thoughts on the suspension of the G4D Tour, stating that it has affected his livelihood and the broader community of disabled golfers.
Future of the G4D Tour
The DP World Tour is in discussions with the European Disabled Golf Association, the R&A, and the International Golf Federation regarding a new schedule for the G4D Tour. Officials are focused on hosting key events that elevate the visibility and participation of disabled golfers, indicating plans for future developments aimed at enhancing golf’s Paralympic potential.
Hosting the Kip Poppart World Invitational
Earlier this month, Poppart took the initiative to host his own tournament, the Kip Poppart World Invitational, at the London Golf Club in Kent. This event attracted some of the best disabled golfers, with each player receiving a prize of £3,000. Poppart emphasized the importance of compensating athletes at the highest levels of disability sports, advocating for increased visibility and opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
