Security Footage Captures Disturbing Incident in Hawaii
A recent video captured by a security camera on Hawaii Island shows a shirtless man walking down a dirt driveway with his dog. As a car passed by, the man suddenly fell to the ground, prompting concern from nearby residents.
The property owner quickly contacted the authorities after witnessing the incident. Mark Wyatt, who owns four acres in rural Puna, recognized the individual as Jacob Baker, a former neighbor and the primary suspect in a string of murders that had unsettled the typically peaceful community.
According to Wyatt, he received a call from a police officer shortly after dialing 911, informing him that Baker was in custody. Wyatt expressed immense relief, stating that there had been considerable anxiety over the possibility of Baker returning to their neighborhood armed.
While a spokesperson for the Hawaii Police Department refrained from elaborating on the role of the video in Baker’s capture, Police Chief Reed Mahuna commended the individual who reported the sighting, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance in resolving such dangerous situations.
Chief Mahuna revealed that the tip provided law enforcement with crucial information about Baker’s location, noting that he had been hiding in tall grass and crouching as vehicles passed. This information was subsequently verified through the security footage.
Officers discovered Baker, 36, concealed in a small cave on a nearby property. He was taken into custody without resistance and faces charges for second-degree murder, among other allegations. As of now, it remains unclear whether Baker has legal representation.
Authorities suspect Baker’s involvement in the deaths of three individuals, including Robert Shine and John Kearse, both 69, as well as an unidentified 79-year-old man. Shine was found deceased on Monday, with the others discovered the subsequent day. Autopsy results revealed that Shine died from strangulation, while Kearse succumbed to sharp force trauma.
Details regarding Baker’s behavior prior to the incident paint a complicated picture. Wyatt and his partner Richard Valdez noted that Baker appeared to have set up camp on their property, creating a makeshift shelter from cushions near a cliff. The timeline of Baker’s stay there remains uncertain, though Wyatt recalls he had last been on the property to tend to some landscaping tasks.
Interestingly, both Wyatt and Valdez mentioned that Baker, some months prior, had been a stable presence in the community—working as a coconut harvester and caring for a girlfriend and child. However, after the woman left with the child, Baker’s behavior reportedly changed, leading Wyatt to speculate that something had escalated within him prior to these violent events.
In the aftermath, Wyatt shared the security footage on social media to raise awareness about community engagement in public safety, highlighting the need for vigilance in times of crisis.
