Reflections on Akinwunmi Ambode’s 60th Birthday
As the FA Football Cup Final unfolded last Saturday, June 4, 2023, an unexpected piece of news captured my attention: Akinwunmi Ambode, the former Governor of Lagos State from 2015 to 2019, is set to celebrate his 60th birthday on June 14, 2023. This revelation took me by surprise and made me reflect on how swiftly time passes. It feels like only yesterday that I first crossed paths with him in the late 80s. Remarkably, Ambode’s appearance has remained consistent, and he carries himself with a youthful vigor. Not only does he exude a contagious grin, but his athleticism might remind one of an Olympic contender, with bright eyes and broad shoulders that would captivate any aspiring athlete.
Despite a career marked by numerous achievements, Ambode remains notably humble and reserved. Celebrations are in order as he reaches this milestone, yet I find myself reminiscing about my early encounters with this enigmatic figure, which were both enlightening and memorable.
One of my earliest memories dates back to 1980, when he was just 17 years old, a promising student bowling on the cricket field at the Federal Government College in Warri. His talent was undeniable; he excelled as both a pace and spin bowler, showcasing skills that captivated those around him. While he may not have been a household name like Imran Khan or Shoaib Akhtar, his potential for greatness shone through even at such a young age. Ambode’s prowess earned him a spot representing Bendel State University, now Edo State University, in prestigious cricket competitions.
Our paths continued to intertwine when we both attended the University of Lagos, where I studied accounting. On one occasion, Ambode’s warm demeanor stood out amidst university life’s challenges. His insightful perspective often made him appear destined for significant future roles, and his unwavering smile seemed to diffuse even the toughest moments. His ability to articulate complex concepts with ease revealed a remarkable talent that very few possess. It was a surprise to many that this seemingly gentle individual possessed such formidable communication skills.
Ambode’s stature as a good listener further endeared him to peers both academically and socially. He was universally well-regarded, marked by a cheerful disposition that inspired those around him. His capacity to remain composed and professional, devoid of ambition or aggression, made him a unique presence in a competitive environment. Many believed he embodied a spirit that made navigating the ups and downs of university life seem effortless.
After graduating in June 1984, we embarked on our respective paths for the National Youth Service Corps. It was during this period that I encountered Ambode again in 1996 while attending services at the Redeemed Christian Church of God. He stood out not only for his polished appearance but also for his genuine smile that recalled our university days and his aspirations to engage in student governance. Our reunion sparked renewed admiration for him, reinforcing the notion of Ambode as a generous spirit committed to uplifting others.
His proactive approach to service extended beyond personal relationships. By the time we reconnected, he had assumed the role of treasurer in the Mushin local government. His reputation for exceptional service was apparent as he went above and beyond in assisting those who sought his help. Ambode’s charitable acts, such as distributing food and beverages to worshipers, highlighted a kind of generosity that speaks to a deeper understanding of life’s purpose. Such behaviors suggested a man dedicated to both community improvement and individual upliftment, demonstrating the innate qualities that define his character.
