Former President Declares Candidacy for 2027 Elections
Amid heightened political tensions, the Tanim Turaki faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections. The announcement came during a special national conference held at the faction’s secretariat in Abuja. Despite a lockdown of the original venue, the group convened to formalize Jonathan’s nomination, though he was absent from the event. His nomination certificate was presented by Secretary John Johnson on his behalf.
Obi Addresses National Issues as NDC Candidate
Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has accepted his nomination as the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). During a special national convention in Abuja, he emphasized the need for transformative reforms to address critical issues such as insecurity, poverty, unemployment, and poor governance. Obi expressed optimism that the upcoming elections could provide a pathway to solutions for Nigeria’s numerous challenges and called for a cohesive effort to restore the nation’s hope.
PDP’s Turaki and Allegations of Undermining Democracy
Addressing supporters outside the barricaded venue, Turaki remarked on the attempts by unidentified political interest groups to undermine democracy through intimidation and abuse of power. He urged party members to remain peaceful, advocating for conflict resolution through elections rather than violence. Turaki’s assertions underscored a commitment to uphold democratic values, even as the party proceeded with its convention without the approval of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Professor Gana Critiques Venue Lockdown
PDP founding member and Congress Chairman Professor Jerry Gana condemned the lockdown of the initial venue as a setback for democratic processes. Nevertheless, the faction successfully approved Jonathan’s candidacy through a motion that garnered unanimous support, reflecting a unified front within the party despite external pressures.
Obi’s Vision for Unity and Security
During his nomination acceptance, Obi highlighted the importance of national unity as a cornerstone for rebuilding Nigeria. He expressed the need to transform societal divisions into strengths and proposed enhanced intelligence-driven measures to address insecurity. Obi called for reforms in health care and education, committing to double health insurance coverage and improve primary healthcare access, aiming to create a healthier, more educated Nigeria.
Makinde Champions Reforms as APM Candidate
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has also accepted the nomination as the presidential candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM). In a gathering in Ibadan attended by political leaders and representatives, Makinde emphasized that his candidacy is rooted in the desire for meaningful reform and empowerment of the Nigerian populace. He assured citizens of his commitment to pragmatic governance that prioritizes their needs and welfare.
Focus on Oil and Food Security
Makinde delineated his vision for Nigeria’s resource management, strongly advocating for a comprehensive reform of the oil and gas sector to ensure citizens benefit from the nation’s wealth. He remarked on the unacceptable nature of hunger in a resource-rich country and pledged to implement practical solutions to food security challenges. By prioritizing leadership that listens and acts, Makinde aims to restore confidence and hope among Nigerians during this pivotal time in the nation’s history.
