Seizure of Military Ammunition and Large Drug Busts in Kaduna
Officials from the State Narcotics Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have made significant drug and ammunition seizures in Kaduna State, underscoring ongoing efforts to combat the trafficking of illegal substances and weaponry. On Sunday, the agency announced the recovery of 380 rounds of military-grade ammunition and the arrest of a couple linked to over 1.2 tonnes of cannabis.
Details of the Arrest in Kaduna
Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director-General for Media and Advocacy, provided details about the operations in a statement. The agency’s operatives apprehended 30-year-old suspect Sunusi Musa during a patrol along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Jere on May 24. Musa was allegedly transporting 380 rounds of 7.62mm military ammunition destined for Katsina State.
Significant Cannabis Discovery
In a concurrent operation, investigators also arrested a couple, Musa Sunday and Mercy Sunday, along with a third suspect, Salomi Ezekiel, aged 38, after discovering 100 jumbo bags filled with skunk cannabis at their residence in the Gonin Gora area of Kaduna. The combined weight of the seized cannabis was reported at 1,246 kilograms.
Additional Drug Seizures in Lagos
Separately, the agency reported the interception of a shipment containing illegal drugs concealed within water purifiers that were transported from the Netherlands to Lagos. On May 26, NDLEA personnel uncovered three kilograms of ketamine, commonly referred to as ecstasy, alongside 199 grams of MDMA at a courier facility.
Operations in Niger State
NDLEA operatives in Niger State also achieved a significant breakthrough on May 27, raiding a warehouse in Gidan Kuka, located in the Bosso Local Government Area. During this operation, 457 kilograms of skunk cannabis were recovered. The suspect, Godwin Zakka, aged 46, was later arrested at his residence in the Gbeganu area of Minna in connection with the incident.
Drug Interdiction in Enugu State
In Enugu State, NDLEA officers on patrol along the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway intercepted a commercial vehicle bound for Taraba State on May 28. A thorough search unearthed a substantial haul of drugs, including 22,000 tramadol tablets, 100 ampoules of pentazocine, and 200 grams of bromazepam. One suspect, James Maigari Wisdom, was apprehended during this operation.
Commitment to Drug Awareness and Enforcement
The NDLEA remains actively engaged in raising awareness about drug abuse. The agency conducts educational campaigns in schools, workplaces, and community centers nationwide. Commending the proactive efforts of officers involved in the recent operations, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retired), reiterated the importance of collaboration among law enforcement agencies. He urged police officers across the country to stay dedicated to both reducing the supply of drugs and promoting public awareness against drug abuse.
