Navy Marks 70 Years of Achievements in Maritime Security
On the occasion of the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bolstering maritime security in Nigeria. The President commissioned three new naval vessels: NNS Oloibiri, NNS Mambilla, and NNS Gurara, and also initiated the Gulf of Guinea Joint Maritime Task Force. This initiative aims to enhance regional security and combat transnational crimes such as piracy and oil theft.
Celebrating a Historic Milestone
Speaking from the Eko Atlantic Waterfront in Lagos during the inauguration of the 2026 Naval International Review, President Tinubu characterized the event as a historic milestone for the Navy. He noted how the service has transformed from its inception in 1956 into one of Africa’s most formidable naval forces, playing a crucial role in national security, economic prosperity, and regional stability.

During the ceremonies, President Tinubu emphasized his administration’s dedication to modernizing the Nigerian Navy. President Tinubu commended the Navy’s recent successes in eradicating piracy and significantly reducing crude oil theft in Nigerian waters. Through enhanced surveillance and rapid response mechanisms, the Navy has improved safety along the coast, which in turn has led to increased oil production and overall economic growth.

In his address, Tinubu urged Navy personnel to uphold high standards of professionalism and discipline, encouraging continuous adaptation to evolving security challenges. The President introduced the Gulf of Guinea Union Maritime Task Force, aimed at fostering closer collaboration among regional partners in combatting piracy, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes. He expressed gratitude to international allies for their support in enhancing maritime security in the region, reinforcing the importance of collective efforts for sustainable governance.

He assured that the Navy remains loyal and dedicated to protecting Nigeria’s marine sovereignty and upholding international standards.
