Nigerian Authorities Move Toward Establishing State Police Force
On Thursday, Nigerian authorities signaled notable progress in the initiative to establish a state police force. The presidential office announced that the necessary constitutional amendments are set to be finalized shortly.
Four Months of Consultations Yield Results
This development follows approximately four months of discussions involving government executive agencies, parliament, and relevant security authorities. Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, shared this update during a briefing for state house correspondents after a consultative meeting held at the State House in Abuja.
Legal Framework for Decentralization of Security
President Bola Tinubu has been a strong proponent of creating a state police force to decentralize Nigeria’s security system, a move aimed at addressing persistent grassroots insecurity. Implementing this initiative requires an amendment to the 1999 constitution, which currently places police authority solely under federal control.
The President has formally urged the National Assembly to review the relevant legislation that governs the establishment of a national police force. This request has sparked consultations between the president and state governors, leading nearly all state governments to express support for the initiative.
Discussions on State-Based Policing
At a recent meeting of the National Economic Council, chaired by Vice President Kassim Shettima, discussions took place among two governors and the president regarding a method for capable states to establish their own police units.
Addressing Security and Legal Considerations
The proposed state police will complement the existing federal security framework. The administration aims to expedite the devolution of security responsibilities and enhance auxiliary forces, such as forest rangers. Following Thursday’s discussions, Gbajabiamila emphasized the importance of navigating constitutional and legal challenges carefully. He noted that while momentum is building, the establishment of a state police force involves complex legal considerations.
Public Support for the Initiative
Gbajabiamila highlighted the increasing public backing for the creation of a state police force, noting that the conversation has shifted from the validity of the initiative to the establishment of a sound legal and institutional framework for its effective operation.
President Tinubu remains steadfast in his belief that a state police force is an essential response to Nigeria’s evolving security landscape. He is expected to receive a comprehensive report on the outcomes of recent meetings, which aim to bolster internal security, enhance regional intelligence capabilities, and empower local governments to tackle emerging threats across the nation.
