Mercedes Competes Strongly Ahead of Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli hinted that securing pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix may prove challenging, as Mercedes outperformed expectations in the final practice session. After finishing behind Ferrari on the first day by three-tenths of a second, Mercedes showcased significant improvements, indicating they had worked extensively overnight on the W17’s setup.
Antonelli Sets Impressive Pace
Aiming for his fifth consecutive win, Antonelli clocked an impressive time of 1 minute 12.720 seconds, outpacing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.327 seconds. This performance not only affirms Antonelli’s dominance this season but also extends his title lead to 43 points.
Leclerc Faces Challenges
Leclerc initially appeared to have the pace to challenge for the fastest time; however, his qualifying simulation was derailed by traffic in the final sector. Despite leading Antonelli by 0.2 seconds at the end of the second sector, Leclerc struggled further with his car’s brakes, limiting his overall performance.
Mercedes Shows Strong Form
Insights from Sky Sports F1’s Anthony Davidson highlighted Mercedes’ remarkable turnaround, pointing to the impressive efforts from Antonelli. Friday’s fastest driver, Lewis Hamilton, secured third place, finishing just 0.004 seconds behind Leclerc. Teammate George Russell encountered difficulties during his run on soft tires, landing fourth and trailing Antonelli by 0.7 seconds.
Red Bull and McLaren Struggles
Max Verstappen was Red Bull’s closest competitor on Friday, but he found himself 0.9 seconds behind Antonelli. This gap suggests that Red Bull is not in contention for pole position as pace intensified in the final practice session. Meanwhile, McLaren remains about a second off the leaders, with Oscar Piastri in sixth and Lando Norris, who faced a technical issue, in ninth.
Midfield Performance and Crashes
Audi stood out in the midfield, with Gabriel Bortleto and Nico Hulkenberg securing seventh and tenth places, respectively. In contrast, Oliver Bearman crashed during the final minutes of practice, leading to a red flag. The Haas driver expressed remorse over the radio, acknowledging the impact of the incident on his team’s preparations.
Results from Monaco GP Practice
As teams gear up for qualifying at 3 p.m. local time, the practice times indicate a competitive field, with Antonelli leading the chart. Notable performances included Leclerc and Hamilton closely trailing, while the midfield battle remains heated. Teams will aim to capitalize on the tight margins and optimize performance under the unique pressures of the Monaco circuit.
