Lawal Critiques Atiku Abubakar Ahead of 2027 Election
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babashir David Lawal, has intensified his criticism of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In a recent Facebook post, Lawal targeted Abubakar’s political competence, questioned his business credentials, and accused him of engaging in ethnic politics, urging the party to consider a replacement before the 2027 elections.
Defending Against Criticism and Allegations
In his lengthy post titled ‘Kachala 2’, Lawal defended himself amid new allegations related to the controversial ‘mowing’ scandal that emerged during his tenure. He positioned his opposition to Abubakar as a matter of concern for Nigeria’s future, rather than a personal vendetta. Lawal, who claims he resigned from the ADC due to rigged primaries favoring Abubakar, expressed distress over the insults and threats he has faced in response to his critical views.
Addressing Past Allegations
Lawal argued that his detractors have resurrected accusations from a 2017 contract scandal, which culminated in his dismissal, instead of engaging with his current claims. He asserts that a politically motivated conspiracy orchestrated by individuals close to then-President Muhammadu Buhari led to the scandal, which was ultimately dismissed by courts after a protracted trial.
Environmental Projects Under Scrutiny
Presenting his version of the events, Lawal described the criticized consultancy contract as being worth NOK 7.2 million, focusing on significant environmental and agricultural efforts, rather than the “mowing grass” narrative. According to him, the project included vital interventions such as clearing over 320 kilometers of the Komadugu-Yobe River and providing employment opportunities for more than 1,000 displaced individuals. He emphasized that the initiative aligned with the Buhari administration’s agricultural initiatives in the Northeast.
Rejection of Corruption Allegations
Lawal firmly rejected allegations of corruption associated with the contract, maintaining that no money was lost from the government and no evidence of bribery or money laundering was ever established. He criticized the portrayal of the consultancy agreement as a scandal, asserting that it had been executed according to the relevant government protocols before payment was disbursed.
Critique of Abubakar’s Leadership
Lawal escalated his attacks on Abubakar, accusing him of failing to address pressing security issues, including kidnappings and other violent crimes perpetrated by armed bandits in Nigeria. He questioned Abubakar’s silence on these matters and suggested that an Abubakar presidency could exacerbate ethnic divisions and embolden criminal elements.
Calls for Leadership Change within the ADC
Appealing to ADC leadership, Lawal urged them to reassess Abubakar’s candidacy, stating that the party would struggle to win the upcoming election unless it fields a more qualified candidate. Despite facing backlash from Abubakar’s supporters, Lawal affirmed his commitment to speaking out against the former vice president, refusing to be silenced by intimidation.
No Response from Atiku Abubakar
As of the time of this report, Atiku Abubakar and his media team have not responded to Lawal’s allegations. It remains uncertain whether the former vice president will address these serious claims, which touch on both political and security matters ahead of the upcoming 2027 elections.
