Dangote Salt Highlights the Crucial Role of Salt in Traditional Industries
In preparation for Eid, Dangote Salt embarked on a series of site visits aimed at showcasing the significant, yet often overlooked, role of salt within traditional industries and everyday life. The initiative commenced in Yan Mota, one of Nigeria’s historic tanning centers, where skilled artisans continue to uphold age-old leatherworking traditions, establishing the city as a key player in West Africa’s leather production.
During the visit, discussions focused on how salt is integral to the leather manufacturing process, particularly concerning the preservation and processing of animal hides. To support these artisans, Dangote Salt provided industrial 50kg bags of its product to the tanning community, underscoring the vital role of salt in the production chain and its impact on local craftsmanship and industry.
The initiative extended to the Kofar Mata dyehouse, where artisans showcased the complex processes involved in producing locally dyed textiles. Again, the discussions highlighted salt’s importance in fabric processing and dye preparation. Artisans detailed how salt contributes to the consistency and quality of the dyeing process. As with the tanning community, 50kg bags of Dangote salt were distributed, emphasizing the relevance of this resource to the textile craft.
These engagements formed part of Dangote Salt’s broader commitment to connect with communities that rely on these vital intersections, fostering appreciation for the products that often go unnoticed.
The campaign reached its peak at Sabon Gari Market, where Dangote Salt collaborated with Dangote Seasoning for a consumer activation event. This gathering drew together traders, shoppers, and local residents for a day filled with health discussions, product engagement, and entertainment.
Throughout the market, attendees participated in conversations about nutrition, meal preparation, and healthy consumption practices while exploring various brand displays and products. Salisu Balarabe, Sales Operations Manager at NASCON Allied Industries PLC, expressed the importance of marketplaces as platforms for brands to engage directly with communities.
“Markets are central to our communities and everyday interactions,” Balarabe noted. “By bringing this experience to the people, we aim to foster relationships with consumers and business partners that extend beyond mere transactions. Our goal is to help individuals not only learn about our products but also understand their value in daily life.”
A highlight of the event was an interactive health session led by Dr. Amina Saeed Muhammad, who facilitated discussions on Dangote’s refined and iodized salt, along with its nutritional benefits. The session encouraged attendees to ask questions and share insights about iodine’s significance in diets, the body’s salt requirements, and its essential roles in hydration and muscle function. Common misconceptions about salt intake and iodine deficiency were also addressed during this engaging discussion.
At the activation, Zainab Abbas, Head of Marketing for NASCON Allied Industries PLC, emphasized that this campaign aimed to create meaningful connections within community spaces and traditions.
“At Dangote, we believe that brands are more impactful when integrated into the communities they serve,” Abbas stated. “This activation transcends mere product promotion; we want consumers to view Dangote Salt and Dangote Seasoning as integral to their daily lives and the moments that unite families and communities.”
The event culminated in a surprise appearance by popular actor and musician Umar M. Sharif, who added a festive atmosphere to the occasion. His interaction with traders and visitors, combined with a live performance, contributed to the celebratory mood of the market event.
