Leadership Voices Praise for Educational Reforms
General Christopher Musa (retired), the Minister of Defence, alongside Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani and representatives from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has expressed strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s education reforms. They argue that quality education, citizenship, and community collaboration with security agencies are essential methods for combating banditry, terrorism, and other pressing security issues in the country.
Inauguration of Kaduna Christian Academy
These remarks came during the inauguration of the Kaduna Christian Academy, a faith-based educational institution established for the Christian community in the state. This initiative was made possible through the generosity of Mr. Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, a close associate of the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Timing of School Inauguration
The event follows a significant donation made in May 2025 when friends of the DSS chief contributed to the establishment of an Islamic school for the Muslim community in Dambusiya, located in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Addressing Insecurity Through Education
During the commissioning ceremony, General Musa characterized the newly established academy as a pivotal non-military intervention targeting the underlying causes of insecurity within society. He emphasized that national defense transcends military might and intelligence operations, focusing instead on eradicating ignorance and illiteracy to foster lasting security.
The Role of Education in National Defense
“When discussing national defense, our instinct often leans towards military strategies and intelligence. Yet, true long-term safety hinges on overcoming ignorance and despair. This school serves as a foundation for widespread education by the right individuals,” he stated. Musa commended the DSS for its dual focus on security and community development, asserting that true internal security involves gaining public trust and aspiring for a brighter future.
Community Participation in Security Efforts
Musa emphasized that an educated populace is better equipped to combat extremism, crime, and social unrest than reliance on force alone. He urged parents to prioritize their children’s education, noting that personal growth is attainable through hard work and education. The minister remarked on the positive shift in security and governance within Kaduna State, attributing this progress to collaborative efforts from federal, state, and local authorities, while also celebrating Governor Sani’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and peaceful coexistence.
Addressing Local Security Challenges
While calling upon the citizens of southern Kaduna to uphold regional unity against divisive influences, Musa stressed that security forces require the public’s active support to effectively counteract banditry and terrorism. He articulated that silence from the populace only emboldens criminal organizations that often rely on local support structures. “If we stay quiet, we allow them to flourish. We must speak out, as it weakens their survival,” he added, urging residents to relay timely information to security personnel.
Commitment to Expanding Education Access
In a concurrent declaration, the Kaduna State Government reiterated its dedication to enhancing access to quality education, framing investments in educational infrastructure as crucial to the state’s long-term growth. Representing this initiative, the state Attorney General and Commissioner, Mr. James Cunnip, referred to the opening of the academy as a commitment beyond mere construction; it symbolizes hope and opportunity for countless children in the community.
Collective Push for Educational Excellence
Pastor John Joseph Hayabu of the Northern 19 States Christian Association highlighted the DSS chief’s recognition of education as a vital solution to insecurity and poverty. He noted the struggles many communities face in securing quality educational resources and reinforced the idea that all children, regardless of their backgrounds, have a fundamental right to access quality education and moral guidance. The initiative represents not just a commitment to academic excellence but also a focus on instilling strong moral values among students. Furthermore, the goodwill expressed by Professor Suleiman Adamu, Chief Imam of Sultan Bello Mosque, underscored the importance of interfaith cooperation in education, commending the DSS for its inclusive initiatives aimed at fostering communal harmony.
