Nigeria’s Commitment to Strengthening Democracy
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt. Benjamin Kalu, emphasized Nigeria’s resilience in the face of economic challenges, security threats, and political struggles that have marked the past 27 years. Speaking at the 27th Democracy Day interdenominational church service in Abuja, he noted that Nigeria’s democratic institutions have grown stronger, despite these challenges.
Kalu highlighted that democracy in Nigeria is firmly entrenched and serves as one of Africa’s most significant and influential governance systems. He pointed out the evolving electoral process in the country, which increasingly empowers citizens to actively participate in shaping governance.
However, Kalu underscored that the true measure of democracy lies in its capacity to enhance the quality of life, expand opportunities, protect civil liberties, and foster national unity. He reflected on the nation’s democratic journey, acknowledging both triumphs and setbacks, asserting that the perseverance demonstrated is a testament to the Nigerian spirit.
Looking ahead, he expressed optimism about Nigeria’s standing as a leading democracy in Africa, noting improved electoral participation and stronger institutions. While acknowledging ongoing challenges, Kalu remains confident that democratic governance provides a framework for accountability and progress in alignment with national aspirations.
The Deputy Speaker commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his initiatives aimed at stabilizing the economy and improving infrastructure. He prayed for the President’s continued wisdom as he navigates the complexities of governance and emphasized the importance of Tinubu’s “New Hope” agenda, which encompasses vital reforms aimed at boosting foreign investment and enhancing public services.
Kalu pointed out that meaningful reform often necessitates difficult choices and perseverance. He stressed that lasting change is built on courage, vision, and the collective will to prioritize the greater good. He called for nationwide support of efforts focused on economic resilience and sustainable development to ensure a better future for all Nigerians.
