Christian Eriksen is back home with his family and reported that he is “fine” a day after collapsing during a match while representing Denmark. The soccer star’s reassuring message surfaced on Monday, following a distressing incident that occurred during a friendly game against Ukraine.
During the match held in Odense, Eriksen clutched his chest in the 65th minute, prompting immediate medical attention as players from both teams formed a protective circle around him. After falling to the ground, he was subsequently transported to a hospital for further evaluation. This alarming episode follows Eriksen’s previous cardiac arrest during the 2021 European Championship match, for which he received an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to aid his heart.
Health Update from Eriksen
For the first time since the incident, Eriksen took to social media to share his condition after the Danish Football Federation released an official update via team doctors. “I want everyone to know I’m fine and at home with my family,” he conveyed through an Instagram post. He acknowledged the emotional impact the ICD’s shock had on him and his family but emphasized that this situation differs from the one he faced in 2021.
“The recovery process has already begun,” Eriksen wrote, expressing gratitude toward both the medical team and his teammates. He particularly thanked the doctors who have been crucial in managing his heart condition over the years, crediting their expertise with the successful operation of his ICD during moments of crisis.
Eriksen indicated that he is now concentrating on recovery, cherishing time with his family, planning a vacation, and engaging in soccer with his children. The positive messages continued to flow, with many athletes—including Argentina’s Lautaro Martinez and Manchester United’s Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire—offering their support through Instagram.
In a heartfelt Facebook message, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen extended her well-wishes to Eriksen and those affected by his recent health scare. She conveyed her relief at the uplifting news about his condition, following her initial shock at the incident.
The match was ultimately called off after Eriksen’s collapse, with Denmark leading 2-1 at the time. Notably, neither Denmark nor Ukraine has qualified for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which begins this week in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Eriksen’s previous cardiac arrest during a European Championship group match against Finland five years ago necessitated the implantation of an ICD several months later. The British Heart Foundation describes these devices as small electrical systems designed to treat individuals with dangerously irregular heart rhythms, delivering electrical impulses to normalize the heart’s activity.
After Eriksen’s collapse on Sunday, Danish team doctor Morten Bosen indicated that the device responded appropriately, although team officials remain unclear about the exact cause of Eriksen’s distress. Following his 2021 incident, Eriksen moved from Italian club Inter Milan to return to the pitch, as Italy’s health regulations prohibited players from competing with an ICD. He found a new opportunity at Brentford in 2022, later joining Manchester United from 2022 to 2025.
Currently, Eriksen is part of Wolfsburg in Germany and has a contract that lasts until the end of the 2026-27 season. Following the team’s recent relegation from the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg expressed hopes for Eriksen’s swift recovery.
