Nigeria Immigration Service Enhances Border Security with Advanced Technology
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced significant upgrades to border security, leveraging advanced technology and heightened surveillance measures to combat illegal immigration and migrant smuggling. This initiative aims to fortify border control and improve the integrity of migration management in the country.
During an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, Military Public Relations Officer Mr. Akinsola Akinlabi outlined recent successes related to the identification and interception of illegal border crossings. He emphasized the ongoing commitment to rigorous border security operations, which have proven effective in monitoring and controlling movement across the region.
Akinlabi noted that Border Patrol agents are consistently working to thwart illegal immigration attempts through unauthorized pathways. By conducting thorough checks, law enforcement personnel often assist individuals embarking on irregular migration journeys, reuniting them with their families in many instances. He highlighted that these efforts have led to a notable decline in irregular land migration.
The spokesperson elaborated on the NIS’s surveillance framework, designed to monitor challenging and remote areas that are often difficult for staff to access. This infrastructure aids in identifying commonly used routes for illicit migration, allowing for strategic deployment of resources in critical locations. He reiterated that the agency’s operations target both incoming and outgoing migrant movements, emphasizing a dual approach to surveillance.
Addressing the complexities of illegal immigration, Akinlabi acknowledged that it is a multifaceted social issue that necessitates a more comprehensive response beyond mere enforcement. He stated that while no border agency operates free of challenges, the Nigerian government is committed to supporting the NIS with essential resources and operational tools. A significant barrier remains the lack of awareness surrounding the dangers and consequences associated with irregular migration.
Looking toward long-term solutions for mitigating irregular migration, technology emerges as a cornerstone of the NIS’s strategy. Akinlabi affirmed that, while traditional border security remains necessary, technological innovations are transforming how border management is carried out. “Technology enables us to surveil areas that are not easily monitored by personnel and enhances our ability to detect irregular migration activities effectively,” he stated.
Furthermore, Akinlabi announced that, with assistance from the Home Office, the NIS has completed the first phase of the Electronic Border Solutions project and is gearing up for the second phase, which aims to bolster existing surveillance capabilities across Nigeria. He underscored President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s dedication to improving border security as part of the “New Hope” agenda, lauding the Federal Government for its unwavering support of the NIS’s initiatives.
Akinlabi also attributed many of the NIS’s recent achievements to the guidance of Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, the Minister of Interior, emphasizing that continued support from the ministry has been crucial in implementing the agency’s mandate. “The Minister demonstrates great confidence in the NIS and is resolute in our mission to lead migration management and secure our borders,” he concluded.
