COREN Registers New Engineering Practitioners and Firms
The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has officially registered 3,328 engineering practitioners and 107 engineering firms. This significant move also comes with a series of initiatives aimed at combating quackery and enhancing professional regulation throughout the nation.
Introduction of Rapid Response Task Force
During the 189th Regular Council Meeting, COREN reached a resolution to establish a 90-day Engineering Regulatory Monitoring and Enforcement (ERM&E) Rapid Response Task Force. This task force aims to intensify efforts against unregistered practitioners and ensure adherence to engineering standards across Nigeria.
Enhanced Oversight to Prevent Engineering Failures
This initiative intends to bolster project oversight and minimize incidents such as building collapses, which are frequently attributed to subpar professional practices. The statement highlights that these measures will significantly contribute to safer engineering environments.
Activation of Engineers Disciplinary Tribunal
In an effort to uphold ethical standards, COREN has also activated the Engineers Disciplinary Tribunal. This tribunal will address professional misconduct, reinforcing accountability within the engineering community.
Addressing Fraudulent Educational Certificates
COREN disclosed that it has identified nine cases related to fraudulent educational certificates submitted by applicants seeking registration. These cases will be forwarded to the relevant anti-corruption agencies for further investigation and potential prosecution.
Public Awareness Campaigns for Safety
To safeguard the public from the risks associated with unqualified technicians, the council approved a nationwide awareness campaign. This initiative aims to educate Nigerians about the dangers of hiring unregistered technicians and the importance of complying with technical regulations and standards.
Strengthening Accreditation and Safety Standards
The council reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring all engineering projects in Nigeria are executed by qualified and registered professionals. In alignment with this goal, COREN approved the gazette of the Engineering and Technology Accreditation Board (ETAB), reinforcing its authority to accredit engineering programs nationwide.
Advancing Operational Efficiency
Furthermore, COREN plans to facilitate national stakeholder engagement on the Draft Harmonized National Construction Safety Guidelines, targeting improvements in safety standards across construction sites. To bolster operational efficiency, the council has also directed the completion of an upgraded digital portal for practitioners and stakeholders.
Concern surrounding public safety continues to escalate, particularly as incidents such as building collapses and infrastructure failures frequently correlate with the activities of unqualified individuals working without proper training or certification. COREN’s recent resolutions aim to fortify regulatory enforcement and improve safety standards within the engineering sector, reflecting Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing governance in engineering practices for national development.
