Call for Post-Election Technology Audit
The Case Tracking and Response Center (CTRC), orchestrated by the Balm in Gilead Sustainable Development Foundation (BIGIF), has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct an extensive post-election audit regarding the performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). The center emphasized the necessity of enhancing technological readiness for forthcoming elections in Nigeria.
Importance of Technological Integration in Electoral Reforms
In a post-election statement released to Business Day in Akure on Monday, the CTRC highlighted that the integration of technology has become vital for electoral reforms. As INEC gears up for the upcoming Osun governorship election and the critical 2027 general election, it is essential for the commission to rigorously evaluate the effectiveness of the BVAS, ensuring its reliability, speed, and accessibility, particularly for older voters.
Strengthening Law Enforcement Collaboration Against Vote Trading
Oluwatuminu Adedeji, the Executive Director of the organization, called upon INEC, the Nigeria Police Force, and other relevant agencies—including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC)—to enhance collaboration in investigating and prosecuting vote-trading violations under the 2026 Elections Act. Consistent enforcement remains crucial for safeguarding the integrity of upcoming elections.
Widespread Concerns Over Electoral Integrity
The CTRC’s statement noted that vote buying and selling emerged as the most significant electoral concern during the election period. Community observers documented instances of vote transactions in several polling units across local government areas, including Ado, Moba, and Ikere. Reports revealed that individuals were allegedly compensated post-voting, while party agents were observed distributing tickets or directing voters to nearby locations, with payments ranging from N2,000 to N20,000.
Addressing Vote Trading and Voter Inducement
The center condemned vote trading and voter inducement practices, stressing their detrimental impact on electoral integrity. It asserted that vote trading poses a serious risk to fair elections and called for heightened enforcement of electoral laws. This action is deemed vital for ensuring that offenders face investigation and prosecution, acting as a deterrent against future violations.
Fostering Inclusivity in Voting
The CTRC advocates for INEC to prioritize the elderly, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and nursing mothers during elections, recognizing this approach as key to promoting inclusion within the electoral process. Additionally, the center encouraged civil society organizations to enhance candidate engagement, advocacy, and voter education, especially targeting younger demographics that historically exhibit lower voter turnout. Strengthening citizen participation is critical for bolstering democratic engagement in future elections.
Encouraging Political Parties to Uphold Democratic Standards
The center urged political parties to adhere to democratic principles by avoiding all forms of vote trading, inducement, or voter harassment. Respecting voters’ free choice is paramount, and parties are implored to address election-related grievances through appropriate channels without resorting to violence, thereby minimizing post-election turmoil.
Evaluating Lessons Learned for Future Elections
Praising the people of Ekiti State for conducting a largely peaceful election, the center acknowledged the notable participation of women and vulnerable groups. However, it stressed that ongoing challenges with BVAS functionality and voting irregularities necessitate an immediate institutional response. Insights gained from the Ekiti governorship election should inform preparations for upcoming polls, particularly the 2026 Osun governorship election and the pivotal 2027 general election. Enhancing electoral technology, bolstering the capacity of polling officials, and decisively addressing electoral fraud are vital to reinforcing public confidence and ensuring credible, transparent, and inclusive elections.
The Incident Tracking and Response Center remains dedicated to supporting election integrity, fostering peaceful participation, and promoting inclusive democratic governance in Nigeria.
