Government Strengthens Commitment to Affordable Housing in Nigeria
The Nigerian Federal Government reaffirmed its dedication to increasing affordable home ownership opportunities for citizens through the Renewal Aspirational Housing Programme. This initiative was highlighted during the recent handover of homes to beneficiaries of the Home to Rent Housing Scheme in Abuja.
Key Handover Ceremony in Abuja
The keys to the new homes were presented by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development and the Minister of Works, Muttaka Rabe Dharma, at the commissioning of the Bungalow City estate along the Deday-Zuba Expressway in the Federal Capital Territory.
Public-Private Partnership Drives Housing Project
Developed by Brains & Hammers Limited and financed by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), the housing project operates under a public-private partnership (PPP) framework designed to expand access to affordable housing across the nation.
Renewed Hope Housing Programme Addressing Shortage
This Rent-to-Own scheme is an integral component of the Renewed Hope Housing Programme, a flagship effort aimed at alleviating the housing deficit and facilitating home ownership for low- and moderate-income Nigerians.
Government’s Commitment to Housing Accessibility
Speaking at the event, Minister Dalma emphasized the Tinubu administration’s commitment to ensuring that more Nigerians have access to affordable housing through innovative interventions. He highlighted the need for enhanced housing opportunities nationwide, stating that affordable homeownership is pivotal to his administration’s socio-economic strategy.
Challenges Amid Rising Accommodation Costs
Dalma expressed concern about escalating accommodation costs in major urban centers, particularly Abuja and Lagos, noting that this trend is causing financial strain for many families and workers. He reassured attendees that the government’s housing initiatives aim not only to lower rental costs but also to enhance the quality of life for Nigerians by providing access to decent homes.
Joint Efforts to Resolve Allocation Issues
The Managing Director and CEO of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Shehu Usman Osidi, acknowledged challenges in the handover process at Bungalow City. He explained that an initial allocation of part of the property to security agencies hindered the distribution of homes to approved participants in the leasehold scheme. A joint technical committee has since been established to resolve these allocation issues and ensure all designated beneficiaries receive their homes.
Appreciation from Beneficiary Representatives
Barrister Sanusi Seidu Dansoho, representing the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for allowing them to own homes through the rent-to-own program. He noted that this initiative has been transformative for many Nigerians, praising the government’s commitment to making affordable housing accessible. Furthermore, Dansoho commended FMBN for its financial backing of the project and pledged that the new homeowners would collaborate with residents and stakeholders to maintain a peaceful and orderly living environment.
