New Solar Power Mini-Grid Launched in Lagos to Enhance Energy Access
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has launched a 505 kilowatt peak interconnected solar power mini-grid project aimed at providing sustainable and reliable electricity to five communities within the Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State. This initiative represents a significant advancement in Nigeria’s efforts to enhance energy access in underserved regions.
According to a statement released by the agency, the project is part of the Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS) funded by the Rural Electrification Fund (REF). The mini-grid will supply electricity to the communities of Odogbawojo, Odoshiwola, Odoayan, Ola, and Igbowon, thereby improving energy access for households, businesses, and local institutions.
The REA implemented the project with co-financing support from the European Union, the German Government, and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) through the Nigeria Energy Support Program (NESP). The initiative was executed by A4&T Power Solutions Limited in collaboration with the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC).
The agency highlighted that this project marks a critical milestone in expanding Nigeria’s distributed renewable energy infrastructure. The 505 kWp facility is designed to meet the electricity needs of households, small businesses, schools, health facilities, and other productive users, ultimately stimulating local economic activity and enhancing social services.
At the commissioning ceremony, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to increasing energy access in line with President Bola Tinubu’s “New Hope” agenda. He commended the REA for its efforts in rolling out more than 1,000 mini-grid projects currently under development across the country.
“The scale of what REA is achieving is extraordinary,” said Tegbe, noting that approximately 3.9 million Nigerians have benefited from home solar power systems through the World Bank-supported Distributed Access through Renewable Energy (DARES) program. He mentioned other recent REA interventions, such as a 704-kilowatt solar hybrid mini-grid in Ofa, Kogi State, and additional projects in Sokoto and Katsina aimed at addressing climate and security challenges.
Lagos State Governance Backing for Energy Initiatives
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised the collaboration between the federal government and private sector as a model for accelerating rural development. He stated, “This project illustrates how partnership can drive transformation in rural communities. Lagos State remains dedicated to enhancing energy access and fostering inclusive growth.”
Abba Aliyu, Managing Director and CEO of REA, claimed that the commissioning exemplifies the REF-IMAS framework’s ability to attract private investment in renewable energy. “It emphasizes our commitment to bridging Nigeria’s energy gap through innovative and impactful interventions,” he added.
International Partnerships Driving Clean Energy Solutions
The director of NESP-GIZ, Duke Benjamin, remarked that the project underscores the significance of international collaborations in Nigeria’s clean energy transition. “This endeavor showcases how strong alliances can deliver comprehensive climate-smart energy solutions,” he stated, expressing pride in GIZ’s role in advancing decentralized renewable energy systems aimed at improving livelihoods and ensuring sustainable development.
A4&T Power Solutions Limited emphasized the commissioning as a testament to the capabilities of Nigerian firms in delivering large-scale renewable energy projects, affirming their commitment to community-focused energy solutions. Meanwhile, EKEDC’s CEO noted the vital role of coordination between electricity distribution companies and renewable energy developers in enhancing service delivery and expanding electricity access.
The initiative has been hailed by local leaders, including the Chairman of Ered Local Council Development Area, as a transformative force for the local economy. He remarked that the project would significantly boost economic activity, empower small and medium-sized enterprises, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
As part of the broader national electrification initiative, this solar mini-grid represents a key project under the Rural Electrification Fund, Nigeria Electrification Project, and other related programs. The REA believes that these efforts reinforce the Federal Government’s dedication to expanding infrastructure and fostering inclusive economic growth while hastening Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy sources.
