Austrian Grand Prix Practice Sees Kimi Antonelli Lead Amid Reliability Issues for Rivals
In the first practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix, Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader, topped the timesheets, leading a Mercedes one-two alongside George Russell. While Antonelli and Russell showcased their prowess, other competitors grappled with significant reliability challenges.
Just two weeks following a defeat to Lewis Hamilton in Barcelona, Mercedes lit up the session, reaffirming their position as frontrunners as they head into the race at the iconic Red Bull Ring. Antonelli currently leads Hamilton by 41 points and Russell by 50 points in the drivers’ championship standings, clocking a best time of 1:07.796. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri rounded out the top three, trailing Antonelli by 0.117 seconds.
However, Lando Norris faced setbacks as his McLaren suffered a hydraulic leak, robbing him of valuable track time; he completed the session 1.077 seconds off the pace. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen experienced his own troubles, stopping twice in the pit lane shortly after the session began due to software issues, which hampered both Red Bulls’ performance. Izak Hajar’s problems compounded for his team as well, with an engine change causing him to lose nearly half of the session.
In preparation for their home race, Red Bull introduced significant aerodynamic updates to their car, hoping to enhance competitiveness. Verstappen, who finished the session in fourth, voiced his dissatisfaction with the car’s balance, noting, “the whole car is shaking when I brake,” indicating ongoing challenges for the team.
Sky Sports F1 analyst Karun Chandhok weighed in on the situation, stating the timing of these issues is particularly unfortunate for Red Bull given their recent upgrades. He added that both teams would benefit from data collection during practice, emphasizing the need for comprehensive data analysis moving forward.
Ferrari plans to debut an upgraded engine on Saturday, casting doubt on the impression created by Hamilton’s fifth-place finish, which saw him lagging more than 60 seconds behind the leader. This result may not accurately reflect Ferrari’s competitive edge, particularly as they bring new enhancements to the track.
Notably, Charles Leclerc relinquished his seat to Formula 2 driver Dino Beganovic for part of the session, a requirement for six drivers to allow emerging talents a chance to compete. Beganovic performed impressively, securing the best rookie result in ninth place, while full-time rookie Arvid Lindblad finished sixth, illustrating the rising talent within the ranks of Formula 1.
