Lagos Government to Investigate Building Collapse in Alakija
The Lagos State Government has initiated an investigation into the collapse of a three-storey building in the Alakija area. Officials have pledged to hold accountable those responsible for the tragedy while advising residents to heed evacuation orders for unsafe structures.
State Officials Express Condolences
During a press briefing on Friday, Commissioner for Information Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, delivered a message on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressing condolences to the families affected by this unfortunate incident. “Our first duty is to express our condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident,” Omotoso stated, emphasizing the state’s commitment to ensuring that such tragedies do not recur.
Rescue Operations Yield Mixed Results
The rescue efforts, which persisted through the night, managed to save 27 individuals from the rubble, though nine people tragically lost their lives. “By the grace of God, we were able to rescue 27 people. Unfortunately, we lost nine, which is very sad. We share the pain of the affected families,” Omotoso shared.
Previous Warnings Ignored by Residents
Funding shifts were evident as the collapsed building had previously been flagged for evacuation due to its dilapidated state. Despite this warning, some residents reportedly returned after initially evacuating. “These buildings were marked as dilapidated, and people were asked to leave. Unfortunately, some residents pretended to leave and returned, leading to this tragic outcome,” Omotoso explained.
Action to Prevent Future Incidents
In response to the incident, Omotoso announced the demolition of other damaged structures in the vicinity to avert similar occurrences. “All buildings identified as defective will be demolished. We cannot wait until another tragedy occurs before taking action. Saving lives remains our top priority,” he asserted.
Condemnation of Unsafe Practices
Omotoso also condemned the construction and occupation of buildings situated under high-voltage power lines, labeling such actions as dangerous and unacceptable. “Nothing like this has ever taken place in any civilized society. This situation shows a blatant disregard for safety regulations and the law. The government will continue to crack down on such violations,” he vowed.
Investigation and Accountability Promised
Assuring residents of a thorough investigation, Omotoso noted that the building’s owner is currently under investigation. “Those found complicit in this tragedy will be brought to justice. No one is above the law and they will be prosecuted,” he confirmed.
Emergency Response Teams Recognized
He commended various emergency services, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Fire and Rescue Service, police, and military, for their rapid response and dedication during the crisis. “I must commend all of the emergency responders who worked tirelessly throughout the night to save lives and bring the situation under control,” he expressed.
Community Urged to Prioritize Safety
In closing, Omotoso urged residents to prioritize safety over economic interests. “No one should put livelihoods before lives. When a life is lost, everything is lost. No business is worth risking human lives,” he concluded.
Earlier reports indicated that emergency systems were activated in response to the incident involving multiple structures. While initial numbers reported 26 rescues and eight fatalities, the state’s latest figures reflect 27 rescued individuals and nine deceased.
