Rory McIlroy Set for the 154th Open Challenge
Rory McIlroy has drawn an impressive pairing for the first two rounds of the 154th Open Championship, joining Xander Schauffele and Matt Fitzpatrick. Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler will be on the opposite side of the draw as the competition unfolds at Royal Birkdale.
McIlroy Aiming for British Open Glory
As the tournament approaches, McIlroy is eager to cap off his major season with a victory, eyeing his first British Open title since 2014. He is set to tee off at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday in a highly anticipated matchup with 2024 champion Schauffele and 2023 U.S. Open winner Fitzpatrick, who is striving to become the first British Open champion since Sir Nick Faldo.
Scheffler Strives for Back-to-Back Titles
On the other hand, Scheffler will seek to defend his title alongside Tyrrell Hatton and Bryson DeChambeau, a two-time U.S. Open champion. Following a missed cut at the Genesis Scottish Open, Scheffler remains the tournament favorite as he aims for his fifth major title this season. This trio will tee off at 9:58 a.m., and Southport native Tommy Fleetwood will also take to the fairway with notable talents Jon Rahm and 2017 champion Jordan Spieth.
Noteworthy Pairings Highlight the Tournament
Other exciting groupings include Players champion Cameron Young alongside fellow competitors Wyndham Clark and Ludvig Åberg. Scotland’s Robert McIntyre will partner with Rickie Fowler and Alex Fitzpatrick, while Justin Rose, who tied for fourth as an amateur at this venue in 1998, will compete against Viktor Hovland and Russell Henry. Additionally, 2019 British Open winner Shane Lowry is paired with PGA champion Aaron Rye and five-time major winner Brooks Koepka.
Royal Birkdale Welcomes New Competitors
Royal Birkdale member Matt Baldwin is set to hit the opening tee shot at 6:35 a.m. on Thursday after securing his spot in the final qualifier. Joe Dean, who progressed through the last chance qualifier, will enjoy a three-ball with 2016 champion Henrik Stenson and the rising star Max Homa.
