Tribute to Bart Naji: A Celebration of Excellence and Humanity
This weekend, Enugu will host a celebration honoring Bart Naji, a remarkable figure who has inspired people both in Nigeria and abroad. Acknowledged for his impressive achievements in engineering and community empowerment, Naji stands out as not only a world-class scholar but also a compassionate and generous individual, traits that set him apart from many of his contemporaries.
Discussing Naji’s accomplishments often feels like indulging in hagiography, given his significant contributions to engineering and his recent efforts to illuminate the nine local government areas of Abia State known as the Aba Ring Zone. Despite nearly two decades of delays from bureaucratic hurdles, his relentless pursuit of progress exemplifies a level of dedication deserving of historical recognition. Yet to his family and friends, he remains an approachable, down-to-earth person—a true embodiment of shared humanity.
Though he has consistently excelled in his field since a young age, Naji has also experienced life’s lighter side. During his visits from the United States in the early 1990s, when he held a prestigious position as a professor of engineering at a leading research university, he would unwind with friends dancing to hit songs in Lagos. Yet, his commitment to his work was unwavering; he would always prioritize catching the earliest flight to Abuja or other locations the next day, diligently attending to his professional obligations.
In 1993, I vividly recall urging him to take a later flight to Abuja when he had just returned from abroad. Despite my concerns for his well-being and the need for rest, he accepted my advice. This decision proved fortuitous, as the earlier flight we had considered was hijacked, a shocking incident that underscored the unpredictable nature of travel in that era. The fact that he was on the second flight not only saved him but also turned my once-doubtful instincts into a point of pride.
My sense of time became a subject of lighthearted banter between Naji and myself after a memorable incident in July 1992. Following a lively discussion with renowned scholar Ali Mazrui, I insisted we leave early for the airport. My predictions about flight delays came to fruition when we arrived to find the plane ready to depart. Despite my miscalculation, Naji’s ability to find humor in the situation while offering me a seat on the flight spoke to his ever-positive demeanor, even amid inconveniences.
Naji’s character truly shines even in moments of tension. On October 1, 2024, during what was supposed to be a routine afternoon, he exhibited a surprising burst of excitement over his wife’s arrival. This display of emotion reaffirmed his deep care for his family and highlighted his contrast to the composed persona he typically presents. His concerns for her safety and well-being reflect the strong familial ties that ground him, even as he continues to strive for excellence in his professional life.
At his core, Bart Naji seeks to be recognized not just as an academic trailblazer or award winner, but as a man who remains connected to his roots. His decision not to assume lofty titles during his tenure as Minister of Science and Technology exemplifies his desire for authenticity. Celebrating his 70th birthday, Naji represents a lifetime of breaking barriers, and we join a chorus of admirers seeking to honor a truly outstanding individual whose contributions have been invaluable. His legacy is, without doubt, a treasure to cherish.
