Opposition Critiques Bayelsa Governor’s Stadium Proposal
The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed strong opposition to Governor Douye Diri’s plan for a N100 billion, 25,000-seater stadium. The party has urged the administration to prioritize initiatives focused on job creation, food security, and poverty alleviation instead.
Call for Pragmatic Governance
In a statement issued on Thursday by Public Relations Secretary Mark Ikaebimo, the PDP emphasized that while infrastructure development is important, government spending should primarily support projects that foster job creation, stimulate local businesses, and enhance residents’ quality of life. The party criticized the Diri-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government for its failure to tackle escalating hunger, unemployment, and poverty in the state.
Demanding Accountability
The PDP accused the government of resorting to “abuse and political slander” in response to critiques, insisting that these tactics will not resolve the pressing issues citizens face. “The Diri-led APC government should address the real concerns of hunger, unemployment, and poverty instead of attacking the messengers,” the statement read. The opposition party asserted that constructive dialogue is essential, emphasizing that residents deserve solutions rather than insults.
Concerns Over Public Spending
The proposed stadium has raised fundamental questions regarding the government’s priorities and the judicious use of public funds. The PDP highlighted that infrastructure projects should be meaningful by creating opportunities and enhancing citizens’ living conditions. The disclosure that the estimated construction cost could exceed N100 billion has prompted calls for clarity on the project’s economic legitimacy, sustainability, and potential benefits, including the number of permanent jobs and business opportunities it might generate.
Neglect of Existing Facilities
The PDP also pointed to the underutilization of the Samson Siasia Stadium, emphasizing that it should have served as a center for sports development and economic growth. The recent announcement of plans to renovate the stadium suggests an acknowledgment of its long-standing neglect, leading the opposition to question the government’s record on sports investment. “After over six years under the current administration, the need for renovation indicates a failure to invest adequately in existing infrastructure,” the statement noted.
Critique of Public Services
The state of public transportation and water supply has also come under scrutiny. The PDP criticized the ongoing lack of a functional public water system in Yenagoa, resulting in residents depending on commercial tricycles for transportation. This situation raises concerns about the administration’s ability to prioritize essential public services over ambitious projects like a new stadium.
Call for Economic Transformation
The PDP concluded with a call for the state government to implement a comprehensive economic recovery strategy. They advocated for a wealth creation and food security program with clear objectives focused on job creation, industrialization, investment attraction, and poverty reduction. The opposition pledged to support policies that advance the welfare of Bayelsans while maintaining accountability for the government’s actions.
