Local Woman Embodies Spirit of Unity Through Military Service
CINCINNATI – As the World Cup unites people from diverse cultures across the globe, that same spirit of togetherness is reflected in the journey of a local woman. Although originally from Brazil, Lise Oliveira has pledged her allegiance to the United States by enlisting in the Ohio Army National Guard.
Having trained with the National Guard, Oliveira expresses her desire to give back to the nation that has provided her with new opportunities. “I decided to serve in the military to show my gratitude for the life I’ve found here,” she remarked.
This summer, approximately 120 new recruits, including Oliveira, are undergoing rigorous training to prepare for their military careers. According to Sergeant Major Christopher David, the recruits receive comprehensive instruction on various essential aspects, such as military customs, ranks, and time notation.
Oliveira acknowledges the challenges of military training but maintains a positive mindset. “It’s tough, but I’m approaching it with the notion that it will ultimately be enjoyable. I want to be here; nobody forced me to join. I see this as a small step in a much larger journey,” she explains.
For Oliveira, the transition is familiar. Having immigrated to the United States less than a year ago, she reflects on how much the country has given her. “This is my way of saying thank you for the opportunities I’ve received in such a short time,” she adds.
Captain Ralph Locke highlights the diverse backgrounds of recruits joining the Ohio Army National Guard, noting a growing number from Africa and South America who seek to serve while building new lives in the United States. This influx offers fresh perspectives and enriches the military community.
Oliveira firmly believes that America is among the best places to live. “You don’t need immense wealth to lead a safe and fulfilling life here. My experience in the military makes me feel more like an American, which holds great significance for me,” she says.
According to Congress, nearly 50,000 foreign nationals are currently serving in the U.S. military’s active and reserve ranks. This trend is not new, as immigrants have historically played a vital role in U.S. military service. From Alexander Hamilton’s contributions during the Revolutionary War to the hundreds of thousands of foreign-born soldiers who fought in major conflicts such as the Civil War and World Wars, immigrant service has been a cornerstone of America’s military history.
Recruiting Staff Sergeant Chase Silcott expresses his admiration for Oliveira’s resilience and dedication. “Lise is a remarkable individual—physically fit, intelligent, and has already earned a bachelor’s degree in Brazil,” he notes. “Her mental fortitude sets her apart.” Oliveira herself relishes the challenge, saying, “Choosing to come to a new country and adapt to its culture and language is significant—it reflects a readiness to embrace change.”
By serving in the National Guard, Oliveira is on an expedited path to U.S. citizenship. According to David, eligible recruits can complete the naturalization process by the conclusion of basic training, effectively shortening what can often be a years-long process to mere months.
