United Peoples Movement Challenges Government’s Narrative on Terrorism Fight
The United Peoples Movement (UPM) has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for allegedly misleading the public regarding a letter from former US President Donald Trump. The UPM contends that the letter does not endorse the government’s performance in combating terrorism, but rather acknowledges Tinubu’s commitment to addressing insecurity.
Demands Clarification from the President’s Office
Abubakar Yusuf, the National Public Relations Secretary of UPM, has urged the President’s Office to clarify which specific achievements in counter-terrorism were recognized in Trump’s correspondence. The President’s Office announced on Wednesday that Trump had personally commended Tinubu for the security measures implemented during his tenure.
US Military Support Highlighted
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Intelligence and Strategy, Trump also mentioned the deployment of US special operations forces, including Navy SEAL Team 6, to assist the Nigerian military in its anti-terrorism efforts.
UPM Critiques Government’s Interpretation
In its response, UPM released a statement on Thursday condemning what it describes as a skewed portrayal of the letter. The party argues that the President’s interpretation aims to manufacture a misleading narrative about Nigeria’s security landscape.
Content and Context Misrepresented
The UPM asserted, “It is unacceptable that President Tinubu has misrepresented the communication from the US President to bolster the tarnished reputation of his administration, presenting it as an endorsement of efforts that have yet to yield tangible results.” They emphasize that, while Trump recognized Tinubu’s commitment, he did not commend any specific achievements in the fight against terrorism.
No Acknowledgment of Concrete Actions
The party referred to a letter dated July 6, 2026, in which Trump thanked Tinubu for his leadership and acknowledged his focus on the challenges faced by Nigeria, particularly violence affecting religious communities. However, UPM insists that the letter’s content does not signify any notable progress against terrorism.
Calls for Transparency and Accountability
According to UPM, while commitment is essential, it cannot replace actual performance. They criticized the administration for failing to implement significant security measures despite ongoing terrorist attacks. UPM called on President Tinubu to prioritize concrete actions over political rhetoric and to provide clarity regarding the country’s deteriorating security conditions.
The party concluded its statement by warning that if the current trajectory continues, there will be significant political repercussions in the upcoming 2027 elections, as Nigerians are determined to hold the administration accountable for its failures.
