Concerns Rise Over Insecurity in Katsina State
A coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) in Katsina State has voiced serious concerns regarding the recent surge in insecurity following a deadly attack in the region. The coalition is urging an immediate reassessment of the existing peace agreement with insurgent groups.
Recent Attacks Prompt Alarm
In a statement released on Thursday by spokesperson Dahiru Gambo Raffindadi, the coalition condemned the recent assaults on the communities of Farun Bara, Dandume, and Jikamusi. These brutal incidents resulted in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries, causing significant distress among local residents.
Setback to Peace Efforts
The coalition stated that these new attacks mark a significant setback for the fragile peace previously achieved in frontline areas and vulnerable local government districts through dialogue and peace initiatives with armed groups. The resurgence of violence has raised alarming questions about the durability of such agreements, particularly as communities gear up for the critical rainy season, which is vital for agricultural productivity and food security.
Duty to Address Bloodshed
Characterizing the violent incidents as “senseless acts,” the coalition highlighted the profound grief and fear experienced by impacted communities. They warned that continuous bloodshed jeopardizes livelihoods and poses a substantial threat to the socio-economic stability of the region.
Strengthening Security Measures
While acknowledging the efforts of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda in addressing security challenges, the coalition emphasized the necessity for enhanced mechanisms to prevent further escalation of violence. They stressed the need for a comprehensive review of the peace agreement with the bandits to fortify its effectiveness.
Call for Government Action
In their statement, the coalition praised the ongoing efforts of Governor Radda and local government leaders, urging them to persist in their efforts. The statement called for robust analyses of the current peace agreement to reinforce and sustain it against potential breakdowns. “We cannot allow the situation to worsen. Every life lost is one too many, and decisive action is urgently required,” the coalition stated, appealing to all levels of government to collaborate in confronting this crisis.
Urgent Appeal to National Leaders
The coalition specifically urged His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu to recognize the alarming deterioration of security in Katsina State and the broader North-West and North-East regions. They called for the immediate implementation of comprehensive security measures to safeguard lives and property. “Our nation’s security forces must be well-trained, well-equipped, and fully supported to effectively fulfill their responsibilities,” they emphasized.
Advocacy for Legislative Action
Additionally, the coalition appealed to lawmakers in Katsina State to prioritize the pressing security issues facing their constituents, urging them to advocate for concrete interventions to avert further violence. They noted that “now is not the time for silence or routine legislative procedures; the urgency of the situation demands active engagement and persistent advocacy.”
The coalition extended its condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with the affected communities. They called for unity and resilience amid the ongoing crisis, highlighting the need for collective action to restore peace in the region.
