Alfie Devine Shines in Preston’s 3-1 Victory Over Stoke
Alfie Devine showcased his talents with two goals as Preston North End triumphed 3-1 against Stoke City at Deepdale, marking the end of Stoke’s impressive seven-match winning streak.
The 21-year-old Tottenham loanee quickly equalized after Solva Thomas put Stoke ahead with an early volley. Just 15 minutes in, Devine netted a composed finish, shortly after Milutin Osmajic had scored his eighth goal of the season. He completed his brace with a stunning strike, sealing the deal just over an hour later.
Stoke fans provided vocal support, filling three-quarters of the away section and erupting in celebration when Thomas acrobatically converted Junior Chamadou’s cross, giving the visitors a lead early in the match.
Despite a rocky start, Preston confidently regrouped within 10 minutes, taking advantage of Stoke’s commitment to attack. The Potters left all their outfield players in Preston’s half, allowing Devine to run onto Andrew Moran’s pass from deep within his own territory and finish coolly under the glove of goalkeeper Tommy Simkin.
This goal instilled much-needed confidence in North End, who nearly took the lead in the 23rd minute. Liam Lindsay’s attempt from a Devine corner, however, went begging from a prime position.
As the match progressed, the visitors felt the pressure, particularly when Ben Whiteman was booked for his robust challenge on Thomas at the halfway line. Though referee Farai Hallam initially contemplated a red card, he ultimately opted for yellow amid the game’s intense atmosphere.
Preston’s spirited first-half play continued to shine, nearly thwarted early in the second half by a strong defensive display from Andrija Vukcevic, who prevented Stoke’s Million Manhoof from equalizing with a crucial block.
After sidestepping that threat, Preston quickly added a third goal in the 57th minute. Osmajic capitalized on Lewis Dobbin’s precise cross, nodding the ball home from close range.
Devine then added his second after receiving a pass from Ojamyk, deftly lifting the ball over an onrushing Simkin to record the Lilywhites’ eighth goal of the season. Throughout the match, Stoke appeared vulnerable to counter-attacks, with substitutes Jesloun Lac-Saki, Sam Gallagher, and Juno Bae struggling to maintain defensive cohesion.
Manager Insights on Performance
After the match, Preston’s manager Paul Heckingbottom praised Devine’s capabilities while also emphasizing the need for consistency. “Alfie is a talented player, but there’s more to come. He’s had significant playing time in this league, which poses challenges,” he stated. “We need him to deliver consistent performances because he possesses the skills and intelligence to influence the game.”
Conversely, Stoke’s Mark Robins expressed disappointment over his team’s sluggish start and lack of intensity. “We did not commence with the required energy and played below our standards,” he noted. “We allowed Preston to create opportunities in our box, which made the game more challenging for us.” Robins lamented, “Although we managed to create a decent scoring opportunity for Thomas, we ultimately failed to seize the chance to win this match and let our supporters down.”
