Kogi Senator Highlights PDP’s Declining Senate Representation Amid Internal Turmoil
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has expressed deep concern about the significant drop in the number of senators elected under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The party has faced the loss of 31 members in the Senate due to ongoing internal conflicts.
Inauguration of PDP Convention Committee Signals Hope for Reform
During the inauguration of the PDP Convention Committee held in Abuja, Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasized that this event marks a critical step toward restoring unity and repositioning the party ahead of the forthcoming elections. The senator’s remarks came during a time when the party desperately needs to consolidate its strengths.
Concerns Over Defections Weigh Heavily on the Party
In a statement released by her media aide, Mike Idoko, the senator voiced her apprehension regarding the ongoing wave of defections that have undermined the PDP’s presence in the Senate. Despite these challenges, she maintains optimism that the recent developments will catalyze the PDP’s resurgence.
Challenging Times for the PDP Must Become a Turning Point
Akpoti-Uduaghan conveyed her excitement regarding the party’s potential, stating, “Today, we have a political party worth celebrating.” She acknowledged the hurdles the PDP has faced in the recent past, particularly noting how the party had frequently been in the headlines for negative reasons.
Addressing the Leadership Crisis and Its Impact
Reflecting on the party’s dwindling representation, the senator pointed to the leadership crisis that has plagued the PDP. “When I joined in late November 2023, we had 37 PDP senators. Now, we are down to just six,” she explained, illustrating the severity of the situation. Many departing senators attributed their exit to intraparty disputes, but Akpoti-Uduaghan believes that these issues are being addressed.
A Call for Unity and Reconciliation
Addressing the defectors, she conveyed a message of welcome, urging them to reconsider their departures. “It’s not greener elsewhere; you are all welcome back to the PDP,” she reassured them, expressing hope for their return.
Chairman of Convention Committee Emphasizes Rebuilding Trust
In his inaugural speech, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu characterized the gathering as a transformative moment for the PDP. He acknowledged the various internal challenges, including legal disputes, that threaten the cohesion of the party. “This convention is not just a rally; it’s a moment of truth,” he asserted, underscoring the importance of overcoming division.
Moving Forward with Discipline and Respect
Ikpeazu reiterated that the recent appellate court ruling supporting the National Administrators Working Committee offers the PDP a critical chance for renewal. He stressed the necessity of reconciliation, urging party members to engage in honest dialogue and mutual respect. “What we need now is an honest settlement rooted in truth,” he concluded, calling for unified efforts to ensure a successful and credible national working committee ahead of the 2027 elections.
The establishment of the convention committee is viewed as a pivotal step towards stabilizing the PDP, rebuilding trust among its members, and fortifying its role as a leading opposition party, particularly in light of its declining Senate representation.
