Governors Rally Support for President Tinubu Ahead of 2024 Elections
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has reaffirmed the commitment of the five South East governors to support President Bola Tinubu’s campaign in the upcoming elections. His assertion stems from a thorough evaluation of the Tinubu administration’s contributions to the region, which he believes counteracts the negative narratives propagated by certain politicians.
During a recent meeting with the Imo State Council of Elders and the Traditional Rulers Council at the Owerri New EXCO Chamber, Uzodimma, who chairs the South East Governors Forum, expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s achievements for the South East. He claimed that these accomplishments surpass what the region has experienced under previous administrations.
Uzodimma criticized the use of the South East as a backdrop for anti-government sentiments, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between propaganda and facts. He highlighted the significant developments initiated under the Tinubu administration and called for vigilance against misleading campaign rhetoric surrounding the issue of marginalization in the region.
“For the first time in Nigeria’s history, a development commission has been established in the South East,” Uzodimma noted, referring to the South East Development Commission Act, which President Tinubu signed into law on July 24, 2024. The subsequent inauguration of the commission’s board in February 2025 marked a new chapter for regional development, a milestone not achieved by any prior government.
In terms of infrastructure, significant investments have been made in the railway sector. The reopening of the Port Harcourt to Aba line in May 2024 serves as a vital link for passenger transportation between the South-South and Abia states, operating five days a week. Following this, President Tinubu allocated $3 billion for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Eastern Railway Corridor.
Road infrastructure has also seen substantial advancements under the current administration. The ongoing construction of access roads to the Second Niger Bridge aims to enhance connectivity across the region. Notably, Phase 2B of the project commenced in March 2025, with the APC government overseeing the bridge’s construction to further benefit local communities.
Recently, President Tinubu approved two additional road projects that Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State hailed as pivotal for the region. The Otuocha-Anam-Abaji road will create direct access between Anambra and North Central, while the Oba-Nnewi-Uga-Ifube/Okigwe Junction road will connect Anambra and Imo states to the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, facilitating greater economic integration.
Uzodimma underscored that these infrastructural improvements are tangible achievements, asserting that standing before the people of the South East to criticize a president committed to their well-being is an affront to their intelligence. He pointed out that the benefits extend beyond infrastructure, encompassing security initiatives, educational loans for thousands of South East youths, and fiscal reforms that have strengthened state finances by increasing allocations and reducing trade costs.
