According to a recent statement from Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the relationship between the United States and Nigeria has blossomed over the last few years. This partnership has focused on collaborative efforts to tackle the significant security challenges plaguing various regions of Nigeria.
In November, the two leaders agreed to form a joint task force, co-chaired by the national security advisers of both nations. This initiative aligns their efforts on a range of measures, including training, intelligence sharing, and conducting joint operations targeted at curbing terrorist activities.
A notable achievement from this collaboration was a coordinated operation targeting an ISIS hideout in the Lake Chad region on May 16. This mission successfully eliminated top ISIS leader Abubakar Al-Minoki along with numerous lieutenants.
Last week, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, traveled to Abuja to meet with high-ranking officials. During these discussions, Garcia reiterated the United States’ commitment to enhancing cooperation with Nigeria, particularly in security and related sectors.
In a three-paragraph correspondence addressed to Tinubu, President Trump expressed gratitude for her thoughtful leadership, stating that it means a great deal to him. He commended her determination to address the pressing issues in Nigeria and reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-Nigeria relationship during a time of global conflict. The historic U.S.-Nigeria 2026 Defense Cooperation Roadmap serves as an essential framework for their shared goal of combating terrorism in all forms.
Trump highlighted the deployment of the United States Special Operations Command, one of the most elite military forces globally, aimed at equipping Nigerian military personnel with the necessary skills, tools, and intelligence to safeguard their homeland, particularly for communities facing religious violence. He concluded with an eagerness for ongoing discussions throughout his presidency.
