Fitzpatrick Finds Winning Form Ahead of Masters
Matt Fitzpatrick enters the Masters with newfound confidence after identifying the key improvements that contributed to his recent victory at the Valspar Championship. The British golfer rebounded from a disappointing performance at The Players, clinching his third PGA Tour title just a week later, complementing his previous wins at the 2022 US Open and the 2023 RBC Heritage.
Valiant Comeback Following The Players
In the previous week’s competition, Fitzpatrick led The Players until the 16th hole, where he ultimately lost his lead to Cameron Young, finishing with a par-bogey at TPC Sawgrass. However, this past weekend, the 31-year-old golfer managed to close strong, sinking a 14-foot birdie putt to prevail over David Lipsky by a single stroke at Innisbrook Resort.
Aiming for Greatness at Augusta National
Fitzpatrick expressed excitement for the opportunity to showcase his improved approach game at Augusta National, with live coverage commencing April 9 on Sky Sports. His best finish at the Masters to date is a tie for seventh place in 2016, and he is eager to elevate his standing this year.
Confident Yet Realistic About Major Challenges
As the first major of the season approaches, Fitzpatrick brought a touch of humor to his expectations, quipping about possibly winning. Yet, he acknowledged the significant challenges that come with competing in a major tournament, particularly at the Masters, which he believes carries a unique pressure that differentiates it from other events on the PGA Tour.
Identifying the Crucial Improvements in His Game
Fitzpatrick took the time to reflect on the changes that have positively impacted his performance, emphasizing his advancements in approach play. “My irons have improved significantly; I have better distance control and left-to-right accuracy,” he noted. “I can hit the shots I want to hit.” He attributed much of this progress to a productive session with his golf coach, Mark Blackburn, which he believed made a substantial difference in his play.
Commending Consistency and Progress
Heading into the final round of the Valspar Championship, Fitzpatrick had ranked first in approach play for the first three days—a notable improvement from his past performances. “My short game, driving, and putting have always been on point, but approach play felt like the missing link. It’s been exceptional this year and last,” he added, emphasizing the importance of continual progress to open up more competitive opportunities.
Looking Ahead to Upcoming Competitions
The Masters will be live on Sky Sports from April 9 to 12, offering viewers a chance to witness Fitzpatrick’s efforts firsthand. Following that, the PGA Tour will shift focus to the Texas Children’s Houston Open, which will air live on Sports Golf, starting Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
