Free Medical Outreach Provides Care for Over 3,000 Patients in Imo State
During a recent five-day medical outreach, the Jennifer Etu Foundation diagnosed and treated more than 3,000 individuals facing a variety of health issues. This initiative took place from March 17 to March 21 at the foundation’s health facility located in Umnoha, Mbaitli Local Government Area of Imo State.
The outreach offered a comprehensive range of services, including medical consultations, general and specialized surgeries, ophthalmology, dental care, medications, health promotion, obstetrics and gynecology, and laboratory services—all provided free of charge.
A structured approach allowed healthcare professionals to efficiently identify patients’ needs by categorizing health challenges into distinct sections. This systematic method ensured swift service delivery, significantly reducing wait times for the large number of individuals seeking medical attention.
Mission of Free Medical Assistance
The foundation’s aim for offering free medical assistance is to ensure that every patient receives the appropriate care they need, ultimately resulting in patient satisfaction. Mr. Joe Out, the program manager of the Jennifer Etu Foundation, emphasized the outreach’s focus on delivering high-quality healthcare not only to the residents of Umnoha, but also to neighboring communities across the southeastern states, including Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, Anambra, and Rivers.
Otu noted that the outreach had been planned for the previous year, marking this event as the foundation’s second initiative since the inauguration of the Jennifer Etu Foundation Hospital. Over the course of the outreach, they treated approximately 500 patients on the first day and more than 700 on the second, with an overall target of serving around 3,000 patients.
Significant Health Interventions
On the first day alone, 50 general surgeries and 30 eye surgeries were conducted, addressing critical health concerns such as cataracts. Otu expressed the fulfillment felt by the volunteer medical staff in resolving patients’ health issues, acknowledging that many would not have otherwise sought treatment due to economic constraints.
The foundation prioritizes three key areas: health, education, and economic empowerment. Their initiatives also focus on empowering women and widows. In collaboration with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, they have successfully trained over 3,000 women in skills acquisition and agriculture, with plans to extend these programs to additional states like Kogi.
Long-Term Commitment to Healthcare
The lack of accessible healthcare prompted the establishment of the foundation’s facilities. The late wife of the foundation’s original board chairman, Thomas Etu, advocated for the creation of six hospitals in different geopolitical zones to meet the particular health needs of women. As a result, the foundation conducts free medical care initiatives for thousands of patients each year across these zones.
Participants eagerly anticipate the Jennifer Etu Foundation’s annual free medical outreach, with individuals traveling from locations as far as Lagos and Cross River to access the free services. This widespread interest highlights the importance of such initiatives in overcoming logistical barriers to healthcare.
Collaboration and Community Impact
The Jennifer Etu Foundation works closely with organizations like ProHealth International to mobilize healthcare professionals who provide services without charge. Otu noted that coordinating the resources necessary for such outreach represents a significant investment but emphasizes the invaluable nature of patient satisfaction over monetary measurements.
In a statement, Mr. Chidi Nwankpa from ProHealth International remarked on the organization’s commitment to serving underprivileged populations. He stressed the need for government involvement in strengthening health infrastructure, enhancing health insurance systems, and addressing brain drain among health professionals.
Beneficiaries of the outreach expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the generosity of the Jennifer Etu Foundation, its management, and the dedicated staff and volunteers. Anselm Uneze shared his relief and gratitude after receiving free treatment for an eye condition, highlighting the profound impact of the foundation’s work on individuals’ lives.
