Vice President Advocates for Constructive Journalism in Nigeria
Vice President Kassim Shettima has called on the Nigerian media to utilize their platforms to strengthen the country’s democracy through constructive journalism and critical engagement with governance. Speaking in Abuja, he emphasized the vital role that journalists play in shaping public discourse and urged them to be collaborators with the government in fostering a more informed society.
The Importance of Critical Thinking in Media
Shettima asserted that societal decline stems not from a lack of ideas, but rather from a scarcity of individuals willing to critically interrogate those ideas. He stated that the courage to challenge prevailing concepts and to pose challenging inquiries is essential in safeguarding the public from the allure of simplistic solutions.
Celebrating a Veteran Journalist
His remarks came during the public presentation of his book “My Life and Journalists’ Hangout” and coincided with the 60th birthday celebration of esteemed journalist Babajide Kolade-Otitju, head of news at TVC News. The Vice President praised Kolade-Otitju’s contributions to journalism and his commitment to critical thinking, stating that his program, *Journalists Hangout,* has cultivated a culture of meaningful discourse in Nigeria.
Media’s Role in Democracy
Shettima elaborated on the media’s importance in a democratic society, noting that the integrity of a democracy is measured not only by electoral processes but also by the attitudes and responsibilities of its media. “Democracy is dependent on a media culture that understands when to investigate, warn, illuminate, and when to avoid complicity in disorder,” he explained.
Honoring a Legacy of Integrity
During the celebration, Shettima paid tribute to Kolade-Otitju, describing him as a beacon of reason and an advocate for rigor in public discourse. He highlighted the journalist’s lifelong commitment to challenging societal norms and resisting intellectual complacency. “Today, we celebrate not only your birthday but the legacy you have built through your work in journalism,” said Shettima.
The Impact of Critical Engagement
The Vice President underscored the profound impact that critical thinking has on national dialogue, stating that it disciplines public conversations, shields citizens from prejudice, and offers protection against the spread of conspiracy theories that prey on fear and ignorance. He acknowledged Kolade-Otitju’s unwavering integrity throughout his decades-long journalism career as a remarkable achievement in the industry.
Reflections on Kolade-Otitju’s Contributions
In addition, Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Kwara State, commended both Kolade-Otitju and the media’s essential role in Nigeria’s democracy and development. Professor Kyari Mohammed, reviewing Kolade-Otitju’s book, described it as a comprehensive overview of the author’s extensive career and profound insights on politics, governance, and journalism. He recommended it as an invaluable resource for policymakers and media professionals alike.
Former NBC Director-General Mallam Danladi Bako also praised Kolade-Otitju’s courage and qualifications. The contributions of the media to Nigeria’s democratic landscape were further acknowledged by various speakers, including Presidential Spokesperson Sunday Dare, who highlighted the impact of Kolade-Otitju’s legacy on the field of journalism and national development.
